A medium to large sized S/SW groundswell built through yesterday but conditions were poor in the South West, while Perth and Gero offered cleaner conditions with more offshore winds.

While a peak was seen yesterday, today offered the best of it, with an easing and clean 5-6ft swell in the South West, 2ft in Perth and 3-5ft surf around Gero.

This week (Apr 2 – Apr 4)

Today's swell will continue to ease through tomorrow ahead of an acute reinforcing S'ly groundswell arriving later tomorrow in the South West and peaking Friday morning.

The front that produced this swell last night was right on the edge of our swell window to the south of the state, and hence Perth shouldn't see any size and Gero will likely persist in the 2-3ft range. Even around Margs there'll be a large size difference between super exposed breaks (3-5ft) and slightly protected spots.

Winds will continue to be favourable into the end of the week though and offshore from the E/NE tomorrow ahead of weak sea breezes, while Friday should see E/SE winds in Margs and E/NE winds further north ahead of weak sea breezes again.

This weekend onwards (Apr 5 onwards)

As touched on Monday, one final pulse of significant groundswell for a week or more is due this weekend and after that it will all be downhill.

This swell is being generated by a vigorous polar low that's fired up east of Heard Island and will aim a broad fetch of SW gales towards us this evening (pictured right) and tomorrow before moving further east out of our swell window.

The swell form this system will again be from the S/SW and not as big as yesterday's but should peak at an inconsistent 4-6ft overnight Saturday around Margs. In saying this late Saturday and Sunday morning should both show waves around this size range.

Perth should see 1-2ft surf Sunday morning, with 3-4ft waves around Gero.

Winds are looking a little dicey now for Sunday morning though with an onshore S/SW'ly across most spots as an inland surface trough moves east, bringing with it the onshores. We'll have to confirm this Friday though.

Winds should improve slowly next week, but the swell will become small and bottom out into the second half of the week.
