Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 21st of April)
Best Days: Tuesday morning, Thursday morning, Saturday morning
Recap
Friday's large and powerful swell eased through Saturday under less favourable and fresh S/SE winds, which favoured protected locations over more exposed breaks. Sunday was better with the arrival of a new SW groundswell under offshore winds.
This swell has since eased back through today with more variable winds creating OK conditions.
This week (Apr 21 - 25)
Tomorrow will be a low point in swell energy with light offshore winds across Perth and Margs, while Gero will see less favourable SE winds.
A good new SW groundswell is due to fill in Wednesday and peak during the afternoon, generated by a flurry of strong but unconsolidated frontal activity through the Southern Ocean.
The easing trend will be softened Thursday as a weak mid-latitude front pushes in and clips the state tomorrow evening with smaller surf due into Friday and Saturday.
Size wise, the South West should build to 5-6ft Wednesday, 2ft in Perth and 3-4ft at Gero before easing from a slightly smaller size Thursday.
Winds will be less than perfect Wednesday morning and from the S/SE (SE around Perth) but Thursday should see light offshores across the state, and this will be the day to surf.
This weekend onwards (Apr 26 onwards)
The next significant increase in swell is due early next week, but this will be from a funky weather system. A vigorous polar low will fire up in the Heard Island region later this week but as it tracks towards us over the weekend it's expected to break down and then develop into a mid-latitude low.
The bad thing about this development is that we may see poor onshore winds with this swell next week. Check back here on Wednesday for an update on how next week looks to pan out though.
