Tiny surf has continued across open beaches the last day or so and similar conditions are due into the end of the week, but the weekend and early next weekend are looking more active.

This week and weekend (Apr 23 - 27)

As touched on above, tomorrow will remain flat and there's only a slim chance for the odd 1-2ft set at south swell magnets Friday from a cold front pushing across the state tomorrow afternoon/evening. This swell isn't worth chasing but if you're in the right area and have a board it may be worth scouting out an exposed spot for a small line of swell.

Into Saturday a building northerly ridge ahead of a strong cold front should give us some better N/NE windswell across the coast during the morning, but it's acute northerly direction will only see waves at north-east swell magnets, probably topping out at 2-3ft during the day ahead of a fresh W/SW change.

This change will be linked to a deepening frontal system pushing across the state, and we should see this front stalling slightly Sunday and projecting a fetch of SW gales up past the south-east corner of us, favourably through our south swell window.

A strong pulse of S'ly groundswell should result that may be seen later Sunday to 3ft+ across south swell magnets, but Monday morning should reveal better 4-5ft sets. Open beaches will be much smaller and in the 2-3ft range.

Winds are looking great for south facing beaches Monday morning with an offshore W/NW wind ahead of NE sea breezes.

The swell is due to ease into the afternoon and will be all but gone Tuesday due to the front pushing off quickly to the north-east Monday morning but some fresh NE windswell is likely across the region into the afternoon as another strong northerly ridge builds down the coast.

Longer term we may see some new S'ly swell into the end of the week, but we'll review this Friday.
