Sydney, Hunter and Illawarra Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 27th January)
Best Days: No great days
Recap
Saturday started off slow with a small S'ly swell to 2ft across south facing beaches under a S'ly breeze. A rapid rise in large S'ly windswell was seen during the morning though associated with a strong front pushing up the coast, kicking south facing beaches to 6ft under fresh S/SE winds.
The swell eased a touch overnight but persisted at 4-5ft across south facing beaches most of yesterday with lighter and more favourable winds during the morning.
Today the swell is smaller again, coming in at 2-3ft out of the S/SE with variable winds.
This week (Jan 28 - 31)
The rest of the week will then consistent of small to medium levels of NE windswell and E/NE trade-swell generated by a persistent northerly ridge down the NSW coast (pictured right). The longer-range trade-swell will be generated by a strong easterly ridge through the Northern Tasman Sea.
Winds each day are expected to be lighter from the N'th at dawn ahead of moderate to fresh NE sea breezes.
This weekend onwards (Fed 1 onwards)
Small levels of E'ly trade-swell are expected to persist over the weekend and into next week, with a possible longer-range groundswell in the mix as a tropical low forms in the established trade-flow above New Zealand, but we'll continue to monitor this.
