Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Tuesday 18th January)
Best Days: Wednesday at exposed spots, Thursday morning, Saturday as the new SW swell builds, Sunday morning
Recap
The surf has been small to tiny across most of the state the last few days with less than favourable winds Sunday and a return to better offshores yesterday and further today.
This week (Feb 18 - 21)
A lift in S/SW swell is expected across the Margaret River region tomorrow generated by a relatively small and weak polar front that is south-southeast of us and heading towards Tassie.
Sets to 3-4ft are expected across exposed spots into the afternoon as morning offshores tend more S'ly into the afternoon but without much strength.
There's nothing major for the end of the week with a drop in size due Thursday with favourable winds for most of the state and then a new long-range increase in SW groundswell Friday afternoon but too no major size.
This weekend onwards (Feb 22 onwards)
The outlook from Saturday onwards is much better for exposed spots across the state as a series of long-range SW groundswell pulses fill in, with a peak expected through Sunday.
This will be related to a flurry of strong but un-consolidated polar frontal activity in the Heard Island region over the coming days.
What will limit any major size being generated off this frontal activity is the lack of a strong and persistent fetch of winds in the same direction, with more a criss-cross of W/NW and W/SW fetches aimed sporadically through our swell window.
In saying this we should see a peak in size to 4-5ft across the Margaret River region on Sunday with 1-2t sets in Perth and 3-4ft around Gero under hot offshore E/NE winds and light S/SW sea breezes.
Into next week the SW groundswell will drop away through next week with less than favourable S/SE winds for Monday and Tuesday.
