Matt Warshaw on Clay Marzo

Matt Warshaw waxes lyrical in this sympathetic piece on Asperger's sufferer, Clay Marzo. Warshaw's blog entries are consistently good but this one realy chimes.

75 large for living in Kalbarri and surfing Jakes all year.

I'm not feeling too sorry for him.

Bit harsh. Can't say I'd swap positions with him.

That is interesting. He obviously got comfortable with them then the dam burst open. Great that he can socialise once he is over the hurdle. Freakish surfing and wasn't aware he was living in WA I always though he lived in Hawaii on Kaui. I remember watching him in a contest a few years ago it was really sad. They kid was completely freaked out and looked terrified.

My nephew (and also God son) has Aspergers. We knew he was always different watching him grow up. As a baby we thought he might have been deaf as he was totally oblivious to all around him. Growing up, small things like the inability to ride in a car with the window down and a total indifference to animals. It's like the family dogs and cat didn't exist. To this day, routine and order are top priority. On the flipside, he's brilliant at maths and music, he plays Cello and loves computers. He was recently awarded an ongoing paid traineeship developing gaming software. Hundreds applied and did the test and he was the only schoolkid that got in. Maybe they liked the difference in which his brain processed problems. Not a bad little earner for a kid in grade 10 as opposed to stocking supermarket shelves.

He's a funny young fella, looks like any normal 15 year old with the exception that he's 6'7" (no shit- he's like a telegraph pole).

Love Marzo's surfing and the different approach he brings to attacking a wave.

It did sound harsh. Didn;t mean to make light of the aspergers. I was under the impression he'd lost all his sponnos and was picking up glasses at the Pub.
75K is still a handy living from going surfing.

In my books he deserves every penny.

Would that be 75K in U.S. dollars ?
