Leash or Leggie?

goofyfoot Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 06:02 am

...

stunet Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 06:37 am

Frontside, forehand, the same.

Leggie beats leash.

Boardies should never be called trunks.

lostdoggy Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 07:06 am

Must be a lot of yanks on the peninsula for you to even ask.

Forehand and leggie.

Gaz1799 Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 09:26 am

I'd never even heard of leash til I tried to buy one online a few years back.

Are natural and goofy not universal either?

lostdoggy Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 09:50 am

Goofy is, in the states natural is called regular.

goofyfoot Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 10:18 am

Lost doggie
Today's comment on wave of the day made me ask
No yanks here

lostdoggy Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 10:32 am

I see, GF. I'd expect this rubbish from CW but swellnet? Come on guys.
:p

Frontside is American? This is news to me, cobber.

In my quest for authentic patriotism, or in other words, trying not to sound like a fucken Seppo, I checked the Encyclopedia of Surfing.

"Australian surfers say 'backhand' instead of 'backside'" reports Warshaw, however he's curiously silent about frontside/forehand.

the-spleen_2 Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 10:57 am

That's because he's a fucken seppo.

lostdoggy Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 10:57 am

Have another sip of your bud, Stu and just relax.

stunet Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 11:03 am

Can I relax on my backside, or is that American too?

indo-dreaming Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 11:15 am

Im cool with all the phrases I'm note even sure what i normally say, i think normally say legrope rather than leggie or leash.

goofyfoot Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 11:21 am

Frontside is definitely American, bro

Blowin Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 11:36 am

I'm currently reading " Becoming Westerly " and I'd have to say that the author Jamie Brisick is the most Australocised Seppo I've ever encountered.

He is a self diagnosed Australophile - god love him.

Maybe he's also aware that he's writing for an Aussie majority demographic and written accordingly ?

Who cares .....come on over Jamie !

You're more than welcome , mate .

PS I've said this before , surfing has to be one of the only areas in which the American culture isn't the dominant culture. It's Australia by a huge margin.

PPS. Makes me laugh listening to foreigners that have had their education in the English language bastardised by the influence of Aussies.

Listening to Frederico Morais' post heat interviews is a classic example. He sounds like a Portuguese Dog Marsh with his pronunciation.

Fleazool Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 12:51 pm

Leggies, boardies, wetties, stubbies, sunnies, forehand/backhand
Aren't frontside/backside skateboarding descriptions?
Also worth noting:
batsman not batter
rubbish not trash
footpath not sidewalk
defence is not deeefence
Letterbox is filled by the posty. Not mailbox filled by the mailman

Gaz1799 Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 01:10 pm

The drugstore in oz also has an entirely different meaning.

AndyM Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 01:16 pm

Fleazool I'm glad you touched base and threw us that curveball.

lostdoggy Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 01:21 pm

I'll keep it surfing related. Is turtle roll seppo for eskimo roll or did it come from somewhere else?

goofyfoot Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 01:32 pm

Stu, I see what you did...

Naughty naughty
Ha ha

stunet Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 01:45 pm

Ha ha...you've got me doubting myself.

Fucker.

Fleazool Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 02:34 pm

touché AndyM
I mean yeah nah good one

Average Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 02:57 pm

Every time I talk about wearing my thongs in public, my yank friends give me strange looks.

eat-your-vegies Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 06:16 pm

Thats cos they're jandals

Unless , of course you mean .....

mattlock Wednesday, 27 Sep 2017 at 09:07 pm

In Mauritius tgey call thongs pitta pattas. Classic creole slang. Apparantly thats the sound they make when you walk.

Gaz1799 Thursday, 28 Sep 2017 at 12:22 pm

Not entirely related to the thread, but does anyone know who first started using the old (standard) method of measuring wave heights from the back? Seppos or Polynesians?

thermalben Thursday, 28 Sep 2017 at 12:27 pm

No-one actually measures surf size from the back. Those who state wave heights in 'surfers feet' (i.e. head high = 3ft) are simply using an adjusted scale on the face. It is impossible to observe (and therefore measure) the height of the wave from the back - it was just assumed to be the case because the numbers didn't reflect that of the empirical wave face height.

There's a PhD in sociology in this for anyone willing to give it a go.

Gaz1799 Thursday, 28 Sep 2017 at 12:45 pm

Well there ya go, I had no idea that surfers feet was an entirely new scale altogether.

inzider Thursday, 28 Sep 2017 at 02:29 pm

OK so how do commentators call airs
Frontside 360
Or forehand 360
Backside alleyoop
Or backhand alleyoop
I think that as surfers do more and more skateboard moves the tide will change in favour of frontside and backside
The answer will be how do the groms call it
They are the future of boardspeak
Since 360 flips were invented on a skateboard they have gone from the original name to tre flips and on to just tre's
Evolution is inevitable

dewhurst Thursday, 28 Sep 2017 at 03:18 pm

I just call it a frontside 360 and don't even think about what country it's in.
