In my quest for authentic patriotism, or in other words, trying not to sound like a fucken Seppo, I checked the Encyclopedia of Surfing.
"Australian surfers say 'backhand' instead of 'backside'" reports Warshaw, however he's curiously silent about frontside/forehand.
Im cool with all the phrases I'm note even sure what i normally say, i think normally say legrope rather than leggie or leash.
I'm currently reading " Becoming Westerly " and I'd have to say that the author Jamie Brisick is the most Australocised Seppo I've ever encountered.
He is a self diagnosed Australophile - god love him.
Maybe he's also aware that he's writing for an Aussie majority demographic and written accordingly ?

PS I've said this before , surfing has to be one of the only areas in which the American culture isn't the dominant culture. It's Australia by a huge margin.
PPS. Makes me laugh listening to foreigners that have had their education in the English language bastardised by the influence of Aussies.
Listening to Frederico Morais' post heat interviews is a classic example. He sounds like a Portuguese Dog Marsh with his pronunciation.

In Mauritius tgey call thongs pitta pattas. Classic creole slang. Apparantly thats the sound they make when you walk.
Not entirely related to the thread, but does anyone know who first started using the old (standard) method of measuring wave heights from the back? Seppos or Polynesians?
No-one actually measures surf size from the back. Those who state wave heights in 'surfers feet' (i.e. head high = 3ft) are simply using an adjusted scale on the face. It is impossible to observe (and therefore measure) the height of the wave from the back - it was just assumed to be the case because the numbers didn't reflect that of the empirical wave face height.
There's a PhD in sociology in this for anyone willing to give it a go.
Well there ya go, I had no idea that surfers feet was an entirely new scale altogether.

I think that as surfers do more and more skateboard moves the tide will change in favour of frontside and backside
The answer will be how do the groms call it
They are the future of boardspeak
Since 360 flips were invented on a skateboard they have gone from the original name to tre flips and on to just tre's
