Mate I was in Hawaii a couple of years ago. Was out at 10 foot Sunset and none other than Barton Lynch was out. Great bloke, great chat.
What’s more, bombs were coming through that I was paddling for the horizon and he was swinging and going.
To add to this, he’s had a hip replacement. (I even think may’ve had a pacemaker or some kind of heart procedure too).
Barton had a reputation of being a bit of a burner in his younger years. I've had a couple of surfs with him, and he's been super chill in the water. Really friendly and he gets a kick out of seeing others getting great waves. He still surfs really smoothly too.
I’m 55, and had a full hip replacement 3 years ago. I could bearly pop up because of the osteo arthritis before I had it replaced. I had it done the anterior method which is a far quicker recovery as the surgery isn’t as invasive, you are full weight bearing the day after surgery.
Now I don’t even know it’s ever been done, no side effects or limitations to my surfing whatsoever.
Though beware at the airport it does set of the alarm as you pass through to metal detector.

yeah tone, get it done asap!..STARTWORKING ON YOUR FITNESS NOW!!...it really helps with recovery. Do what DR tells u to do & don't rush your return to surfing!! or you"ll be back to where u started. You'll be right to go by the time this covid shite is over, possibly berforhand. lol. Get a cheap LB or big foamie for when u get back to surf.
Hi all,it's now been about one and a half years post surgery.it was total success walking way better and absolutely no pain.surfing wise still feel I have a long way to go and all centred around the pop up .I noticed in the video he looked like he was having a little trouble swing his legs thru.thats me but way worse I have done plentof exercises and now left leg is as strong as right.i will generally get about three good pop ups in per session but seems to go downhill after that .I now am on a ten foot longboard and trying the two stage pop up which I can do reasonable easy on the floor.just hard to tell my body not to use the old method.of course at seventy this lack of flexibility happens even with good hips.anyway still have the stoke and still dig being out in the water.

I am 67,been surfing for around 50 years,and am now staring down the barrell at a full hip replacement on my left side.Speaking to the specialist was a bit of an eye opener ,regarding what you can and can't do after the procedure.Actually coming away from the interview a little depressed as regards my surfing future.Can anyone who has had the procedure or knows of anyone else's recovery and subsequent surfing life post procedure enlighten me about my possible surfing future.Please don't tell me about exercises etc. to stay in the water,as I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my left hip about ten years ago,and have kept the surgeon's knife at bay by religiously attending pilates sessions at a physio and home every day. Dday has now arrived.
