Photos: Better Late Than Never

By Stu Nettle (stunet)

Earlier this week, Craig analysed why the Victorian coastline, particularly the Surf Coast, has been bereft of swell this winter season, and also why their fortunes were suddenly about to change.

As forecast, the swell arrived on Wednesday morning, though with it were winds gusting up to 50 knots that turned guns into sails and sent blinding spray far into the air.

Steve Arklay shot for a few hours till the wind got too much.

Flushed out by the strengthening south-westers, Steve left for home. He returned early on Thursday to find a more orderly lineup and spent the morning hours shooting Bells and Winki.

Keeping a weather-eye on the abating wind, Steve packed up his gear and slinked out of the carpark, setting up elsewhere just in time to watch a great barrel session go down.

Where possible, the surfer's names are in the captions.

The right foot forwards are desperate for a hollow left.

it's hard for a Syd NB groveller to feel sympathetic for Surf Coast crew when u post photos like this

thermalben Friday, 30 Aug 2024 at 02:17 pm new

Vicco doesn't barrel.. says, erm, who?

Nick Bone Friday, 30 Aug 2024 at 06:09 pm new

It does. Just move the the decimal point up a few digits for measured travel time

Lanky Dean Friday, 30 Aug 2024 at 10:17 pm new

Ha @ thermalben !

Brilliant shots, Steve. Captured a special day after a very lean last few months.

Your one of Kenta might be my favourite of yours from that spot over the years. Sick shot.

stevearklay Saturday, 31 Aug 2024 at 10:27 pm new

Cheers Bnkref - Cant substitute style like Kenta is displaying !!!

Solitude Saturday, 31 Aug 2024 at 06:47 am new

The third Bells lineup, with that exquisite curve (guy duck diving under) is my pick.

Thanks Steve. Of the regular photographers posting here, your shots are consistently my favourite.

Well done Vicco crew, not jealous at all!

stevearklay Saturday, 31 Aug 2024 at 10:26 pm new

Thanks Solitude - Greatly appreciate it.

Big props to Kian riding a board he shaped. Awesome to see such a young bloke keeping such a rich yet lost tradition of shaping what you ride alive!!!

Last shot looks like a beautiful spear

Jesus it’s pumping down there today. Literally just saw a sick ride on the Winki cam, a couple of nice big bowling sections. Howling offshore must be challenging.
