Legropes

Ive had the same problem with Dakine leashes, brand new 7ft leash blown off my ankle 1st surf, used it a few more times and same thing happened again the lip blew it off again, gave that one away and just recently i used a 6ft one and same thing happened the lip blew it off my ankle, will be giving that away. Will only use O&E premium leashes and the stay covered hand tied leashes from now on. Those 2 are by far the best on the market. Thanks for replying , so not bad luck on my part , yeah 4 times in 6 months with weak and semi powerful waves isn’t good enough. I will stick with the new O&E premium. Might trial the FCS when these ones have done their time although it happened to a guy last week on a 3 ft wave and I asked him how old was his leash and it was a brand new FCS top of the range .
Hey Supa I’ve had O&E exclusively for a while now and haven’t had any issues. I get the premium one with the quick release pin. Have heard too many horror stories of jagged leggies. Quick release would be a good option given where you’re based.

I actually bought one ( quick release ) 2 days ago , been a few horror stories lately of guys getting dragged onto the crane wreck , current can be brutal and combined with large swell , it’s a formula for someone to die out there. They are still slowly chipping away at removing it . Some big low tides in upcoming months so hopefully more gets done .
Great thread Supa.
For this trip , for larger surf I’m trialling an FCS 7ft 8mm diameter chord/leash .
Large ring pull Velcro release. Not cheap at all $86 AUD…
Had one bad experience in 2022 with a brand new O&E snapping clean in half on its maiden voyage, not prepared to go through that again.
I’ll report back after fieldwork. AW
Good thread.
1. Don't forget that you still have to be able to reach the quick release. Check Stu's old article about Avalon Bob for technique advice.
2. StayCovered hand tied are easily the best I've tried, but sadly not available in Aus/NZ. OE Premium second best.
3. Check your leggies for nicks regularly.
4. Make sure you can swim in from your heaviest spots in big swell without relying on your board for flotation.
Here it is. Worth a read. https://www.swellnet.com/news/swellnet-dispatch/2018/08/21/la-bob-drown…

Handy info Udo.
One more thing.
Obvious to most here but it has to be said. For the newbies.
Learn to swim.
If you're depending on your equipment - or anyone else - you shouldn't be out there.
It’s unbelievable how many people shouldn’t be out there . Including dads pushing their kids onto reef breaks 600 meters out that they are unfamiliar with and don’t realise how a place can go from waist high to double overhead in minutes. What looks like fun from the beach could really be a nightmare ending to a family holiday .
I’m sure there is a leggie thread somewhere but I couldn’t find it . I usually give my legropes away after 12 months . I was using O&E leggie for awhile but after a few broke off at the join ( older model ) I switched to dakine which I had used once before and found them to be a good product . In the last 6 months however on 2 occasions in weak waves the whitewater has been enough to blow the leash from my ankle . I put this down to the velcro deteriorating and gave the leash away , wasn’t more than 6 months old . On two other occasions in 6 foot waves , the impact of the lip on to my ankle has blown it off . This never used to happen and I’m not sure if it’s the quality of the velcro isn’t as good or just unlucky . I’ve since switched back to O&E as their new leashes are supposedly all one piece . Anyone had similar issues with velcro ? I know the majority of brands get china to make their products .
