There were still some OK waves around yesterday, but S'ly winds limited the best surf to protected locations.

A new groundswell arrived into the afternoon and this has continued at 3-4ft this morning with offshore winds. Conditions have remained clean and glassy into this afternoon though but the swell should of dropped a notch.

This week and weekend (Apr 14 - 21)

If you haven’t been able to get stuck into the recent run of swell, don't panic, there's plenty more to come over the coming period.

Moderate amounts of swell are expected to continue through tomorrow ahead of a small uptick through the afternoon and peak Friday morning as the Tasman Low that's been sitting to our east continues to aim a fetch of SE gales towards us. This fetch will reach a peak in intensity off the tip of NZ's South Island this evening, generating Friday's peak in E/SE groundswell to 3-5ft across open beaches.

Of greater importance is Saturday's larger and more powerful E'ly groundswell. This swell will be produced at ex-Tropical Cyclone Ita is absorbed into the Tasman Low, sending one final burst of storm-force winds towards us out of New Zealand's Cook Strait (illustrated right).

The swell from this system should arrive overnight Friday and peak Saturday to 5-6ft at open beaches during the morning ahead of a late drop in size. Due to the short-lived nature of the fetch the swell will drop considerably overnight Saturday leaving fading 3ft+ waves Sunday, therefore make the most of Saturday!

Winds through this whole period will be favourable with NW tending NE winds tomorrow, NW tending gusty W'ly winds while Saturday fresh to strong SW winds, so you'll have to hit up a protected southern corner. Sunday should see moderate W'ly winds all day, topping off a great period of waves.

Longer term (Apr 22 onwards)

As touched on last update there's nothing major on the cards for next week besides small and fading levels of SE swell, so make the most of the coming days of waves.
