Friday's fun swell eased all weekend with light winds from the NW Saturday morning favouring the Surf Coast and then offshore N/NE winds for the Mornington Peninsula Sunday.

Today started out slow with tiny waves on the Surf Coast and small bumpy waves on the Mornington Peninsula with onshore winds. A new W/SW swell is building across the coast this afternoon though, with Cape Sorell rising steeply from small waves overnight to Significant Wave Heights around 4m, with Maximum Wave Heights near 7m.

This week (Dec 9 -13 onwards)

There's plenty of swell in store this week owing to an amplification of the Long Wave Trough stalling across the south-east corner of the country up until late in the week.

The strongest of the systems are currently pushing towards us through the Southern Bight, with a medium to large sized pulse of W/SW groundswell expected tomorrow across the state, peaking during the afternoon.

This will be boosted by some short-range W/SW swell as one of the cold fronts pushes through Bass Strait, generating an additional fetch of strong to gale-force W/SW winds on an active sea state.

The Surf Coast should see solid 4-5ft waves at a peak tomorrow, with the odd bigger set likely at 13th Beach, while the Mornington Peninsula should see larger 8ft+ surf.

Fresh to strong W/NW winds will favour the Surf Coast tomorrow, while as the W/SW swells eased off slowly Wednesday, morning NW winds ahead of a shift to the W/SW during the afternoon.

The next decent increase in swell should be seen Friday and more so from the SW as a nice looking cold front pushes up towards Tassie (pictured right). Winds look good for this swell again and from the W/NW ahead of a swing to the SW during the afternon.

This weekend onwards (Dec 14 onwards)

Medium levels of SW groundswell should persist through the weekend under morning W/NW winds as cold fronts continue to be aimed up through our swell window later in the week.

From here on in, the swell will back away into next week as winds swing around to the SE with a high pressure ridge moving in from the west.
