Southern Tasmania Forecast (issued Monday 17th February)
Best Days: Wednesday, Thursday morning
Recap
Friday's fun pulse of SW groundswell eased backed through the weekend from a small 1-2ft Saturday, while Sunday saw even smaller waves. Today the surf remained tiny but we've got a fun long-range W/SW groundswell due into the middle of this week.
This week and weekend (Mar 17 - 23)
A vigorous polar low forming over in the Heard Island over the weekend (generating a fetch of severe-gale to sub-storm-force W/SW winds in our far swell window) has since spawned off a stronger mid-latitude frontal system and this is aiming a fetch of W/SW gales through our western swell window.
A mix of very inconsistent long-range and closer-range W/SW swell is due to arrive overnight Tuesday and peak Wednesday to an inconsistent 3ft+ across Clifton under W/NW winds.
The swell will drop rapidly into Thursday though as winds swing more favourable and to the N/NW, but you'll have to get in early for the best of it.
Another smaller pulse of swell is due on Friday afternoon ahead of a peak Sunday but from an unconsolidated although strong polar low. The only problem is local winds and they look dicey from the SE to E but we'll have to review this on Wednesday.
Next week onwards (Mar 8 onwards)
We may see another good SW groundswell into early next week with dicey winds again, but we'll cover this again on Wednesday.
