Best Cover Songs
I'll start off with a great song that was also cool 12 years earlier .
Anthrax's cover of Joe Jacksons ' " Got the Time " .....
" tickin ' in my head , tickin in my head "

Indo, anybody can improve on Bob Dylan. My dog whining can do a better job than Bob Dylan. Is it no surprise that Dylan was popular during the stoner period of the 60's. You couldn't listen to him straight!!!
I'll offer up Talking Heads over Al Green. A bit slow, a bit less funky, but works well.
Another Dylan classic reworked with balls...something I always found Dylan to be lacking, especially anything he did with a country influence.

"anybody can improve on Bob Dylan"... blasphemer.
What about Tina Turner covering Proud Mary? The woman lets it all hang out.
Got me through a few graveyard shifts during trans-Atlantic crossings.
jackie mitto's cover of "be thankfull for what you've got" sounded pretty damn fine last night as i was enjoying of few cones of murrumbidgee madness:

Compare Bob to Jimi Hendrix. No competition.
American idol audition : William Hung 'She Bangs'

And this was a fairly handy cover..... Sold a few copies, too, from what I've heard......

I'll probably be laughed at for this, but Sinead O'Connor's 'Nothing compares to you', is a pretty damn good cover.
Built to Spill do great live covers.
They did great versions of How soon is now and Don't fear the reaper this tour.
I'd agree LD, Sinead's version is great.
At the risk of committing sacrilege I'll vote Radio Birdman's version of the Stooges 'TV Eye'. The thought makes me a tad uncomfortable as Birdman pushed 'inspiration' just a wee bit too far; took their own name from a lyric of '1970', played up the Stooges on-stage antics, and yeah, even covered some of their songs.
Still, it's a fucken good version.
Also, I reckon Nirvana were a great cover band. I never was big on them but it's hard to ignore how they transformed some songs. Devo's 'Turnarund', Meat Puppets 'Lake Of Fire', The Vaselines 'Son Of A Gun' and 'Molly's Lips', and perhaps best of all 'D7' by the Wipers.
Listen to the originals and be underwhelmed, listen to the covers and be, you know, overwhelmed. It's impossible to sit there and be merely whelmed - mainly 'cause it's not a word.
Ol' Kurt also made a lot of people rich during those years. The crew above scored royalties they never would've got, and he turned an army of people onto The Melvins and Mudhoney.
Much better than the original.

Yeah good point re' the melvins..... They were a bit hit and miss.... But when they hit, they hit hard..... In a similar aspect to Cobain/melvins, I was stoked when Metallica started doing Discharge covers..... This home made clip is pretty full on....... Don't watch if squirmish, or war footage offends....... (free speech for the dumb is another discharge track that metallica covered)

...talking of Bob Dylan covers who would have thought Ministry would give one a go?

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi's was better than Bob's
Tangled Up In Blue - Bob was WAY better than the Whitlam's limp offering
It's All Over Now Baby Blue - I absolutely love Graham Bonnet's version, so good.
I'll Be Your Baby Tonight - Robert Palmer? Give me a break...
Knockin On Heaven's Door - The Gunners were ok but I reckon without the big backing vocals it would have been a bit of a joke.
So in other words, I just won't have it said that "anybody" can improve on Bob - never, by God, never!

Speaking of Prince covers, Chaka Khan's version of I Feel For You blows the original out of the water. Plus, Chaka was smokin hot.

Cracker of a cover.
Speaking of Sabbath, one of the best Black Sabbath songs not much different from the original but just as good.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="

Holy Christ, The Byrds ripped the universe a new black hole with that version of Hey Joe - that was nothing like what i was expecting, I was imagining all syrupy harmonies.
And whatever he's on, I'd really, really like some.
Reminds me of the Simpson's episode where Krusty sees some old footage of himself performing The Doors' Break On Through.

Yep, this gets my vote.
Youse can all get stuffed if you think Dylan can't sing. Fair dinkum, he gives a man hope. For some reason I love his terrible vocals. On some of his tracks. Others are God awful to be fair.
In a similar vein and an obvious choice, it's hard to go past Jeff Buckley doing over Leonard Cohen.
The other obvious one is nirvana covering bowie without much electricity available.
I'd be lying if I said I hadn't poured a beer over my own head during a pennywise live version of 'Land down under' back in the day.
Also Raised Fists version on gorilla biscuits 'new direction' was a cracker
Yeh, Benski, I like listening to a bit of Dylan from time to time too.
But speaking of good covers of Dylan, I quite like this one.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="

Ah yeah right on. Those two have done some great tunes haven't they?
It probably doesn't count as a cover when another folky sings his song live but I generally enjoy most of Joan Baez's renditions of Dylan tracks.

Ohh that's a cracker Doggy. The original was so sweet but those harmonies put a sparkle in it.
Makes you want to hug all your brothers and sisters. Man.
Okay , there's a fare bit of Dylan talk here ...
I'm going to mix it up a bit .
A long time ago, a few mates and I used to talk about if ' Dylan covered any Tool songs , and apart from a lot of the heavy singing sections he could of pulled it off . There's a lot of spoken word type poetry /musings and ramblings in their songs .
Anyway my favourite impersonation at the time , was singing the song Aenima in best Dylan style .
I won't put you through it .
But listen to this and do your best to hear Maynard s voice transform into Bob's .
" whooah ..... Some sayyyy , the end is neeaarr " .
Bob with double kick peddle bass drumming backing him would be interesting !? !!!!!!
Fuck. A whole lotta fucken junk on here about his Bobness. DYLAN IS DYLAN. When we've all shuffled off this mortal coil, he'll endure. Like the bloke I've just half-arsed referenced. Anyhoo, check it.

Didn't the Buttholes stalk REM in Athens, Georgia once in the late 80s even going so far as parking their van spray-painted with the line: "Michael Stipe, despite the hype, I still want to suck your big long pipe” outside the reclusive and elusive frontman's house?
Fuck, how good is Paul Leary's guitar picking and slippery sliding on that Roky track?
Anyhow, here's the awesomest coverer of songs band ever formed in Madison, Wisconsin:

Stick with it and feel the burn. Hah!
a cover of a cover of a cover and a cracker at that
had this one in my head this morning because i'm going there next week, interesting history to it too
Best cover songs , more points if the original was a dud . Or it was changed so much that it improved it out of sight .
And Go .
