I'll start off with a great song that was also cool 12 years earlier .

Indo, anybody can improve on Bob Dylan. My dog whining can do a better job than Bob Dylan. Is it no surprise that Dylan was popular during the stoner period of the 60's. You couldn't listen to him straight!!!

I'll offer up Talking Heads over Al Green. A bit slow, a bit less funky, but works well.

Another Dylan classic reworked with balls...something I always found Dylan to be lacking, especially anything he did with a country influence.

I'll probably be laughed at for this, but Sinead O'Connor's 'Nothing compares to you', is a pretty damn good cover.

I'd agree LD, Sinead's version is great.

At the risk of committing sacrilege I'll vote Radio Birdman's version of the Stooges 'TV Eye'. The thought makes me a tad uncomfortable as Birdman pushed 'inspiration' just a wee bit too far; took their own name from a lyric of '1970', played up the Stooges on-stage antics, and yeah, even covered some of their songs.

Still, it's a fucken good version.

Also, I reckon Nirvana were a great cover band. I never was big on them but it's hard to ignore how they transformed some songs. Devo's 'Turnarund', Meat Puppets 'Lake Of Fire', The Vaselines 'Son Of A Gun' and 'Molly's Lips', and perhaps best of all 'D7' by the Wipers.

Listen to the originals and be underwhelmed, listen to the covers and be, you know, overwhelmed. It's impossible to sit there and be merely whelmed - mainly 'cause it's not a word.

Ol' Kurt also made a lot of people rich during those years. The crew above scored royalties they never would've got, and he turned an army of people onto The Melvins and Mudhoney.

Much better than the original.

Yeah good point re' the melvins..... They were a bit hit and miss.... But when they hit, they hit hard..... In a similar aspect to Cobain/melvins, I was stoked when Metallica started doing Discharge covers..... This home made clip is pretty full on....... Don't watch if squirmish, or war footage offends....... (free speech for the dumb is another discharge track that metallica covered)

Holy Christ, The Byrds ripped the universe a new black hole with that version of Hey Joe - that was nothing like what i was expecting, I was imagining all syrupy harmonies.

And whatever he's on, I'd really, really like some.

Yep, this gets my vote.

Youse can all get stuffed if you think Dylan can't sing. Fair dinkum, he gives a man hope. For some reason I love his terrible vocals. On some of his tracks. Others are God awful to be fair.

In a similar vein and an obvious choice, it's hard to go past Jeff Buckley doing over Leonard Cohen.

The other obvious one is nirvana covering bowie without much electricity available.

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't poured a beer over my own head during a pennywise live version of 'Land down under' back in the day.

Also Raised Fists version on gorilla biscuits 'new direction' was a cracker

It probably doesn't count as a cover when another folky sings his song live but I generally enjoy most of Joan Baez's renditions of Dylan tracks.

A long time ago, a few mates and I used to talk about if ' Dylan covered any Tool songs , and apart from a lot of the heavy singing sections he could of pulled it off . There's a lot of spoken word type poetry /musings and ramblings in their songs .
Anyway my favourite impersonation at the time , was singing the song Aenima in best Dylan style .
I won't put you through it .
But listen to this and do your best to hear Maynard s voice transform into Bob's .
