John John withdraws from J'Bay

images_1_1.jpeg(Santa Monica/July 6, 2015) John John Florence has withdrawn from the J-Bay Open due an ongoing ankle injury he suffered while on a surf trip. This marks the second consecutive event Florence will have missed because of his injury.

"[John] tried to recover up to the last possible day to fly to J-Bay," said WSL Deputy Commissioner, Renato Hickel. "But as his foot still pretty sore he decided to miss the event and be ready for Tahiti."

Brazilian surfer Tomas Hermes has been selected as the injury replacement for Florence.

Florence joins French surfer Jeremy Flores, who had already withdrawn from the J-Bay Open due to a head injury he suffered while on a surf trip in Indonesia. Currently ranked No. 10 on the Jeep Leaderboard, Flores originally hoped to compete in South Africa, but a follow up visit with his doctor has delayed his return to competition.

4c30354b17be7972c025df082fe3ada5_0.jpg"I just did some last MRI and the doctors are saying I won't be able to surf in the J-Bay event," said Flores. "I have two fractures in my face and a contusion in my brain."

As the 2015 Injury Replacement Alejo Muniz will once again surf in a Championship Tour event, his fourth of the season.

According to his Instagram, Flores underwent two hours of surgery on his face after hitting his head on the reef and has since been recovering in France. Flores is among a list of injured CT athletes this season, including Michel Bourez, John John Florence, Jordy Smith and Brett Simpson, all of whom withdrew from the Fiji Pro due to injury.

The string of recent injuries, and their impact on athletes' ability to compete, has stirred up the debate over the true cost of freesurfing.

The only forum I've seen this "debated" is a WSL blog post and some bullshit filler commentary between Strider and Pottz.

Surfing is an action sport, if the professionals are not pushing the limits they will cease to be professionals.

stunet Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 09:30 am new

Not my words mate, that's a press release. Perhaps the Pottz Strider exchange is the stirring debate they speak of? Not the first time they've talked something up.

nicksanta Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 10:14 am new

Yeah it's annoyed me somewhat as that "stirred up debate" line is at the end of every single article written about the recent event withdrawls, when there is absolutely no debate actually occurring.

I suspect you might be right.

Personally I think we should wrap them in cotton wool and put them in the deep freeze between events.

memlasurf Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 12:49 pm new

It also brings into focus getting their air technique. It needs to be ultra perfect which Fellipe seems to have nailed, otherwise the risk of injury is super high. I am sure the research gymnasts have done could filter into surfing. Makes it all the more difficult the taller your are like JJ. I think he will injured on and off all the time as he goes for it so hard for an air which often is borderline. His technique doesn't seem as tuned as some of the zillas. Yeah uppy all too soft for my liking - what, its only a flesh wound!

Rabbits68 Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 01:46 pm new

I think the injury focus is "magnified" with Pro surfing due to such a small number of competitors that make up the "professional" sport of surfing. Take elite tennis for example, an injury that keeps one player out of a Grand Slam event, even if it's the world #1, is relatively insignificant, but compared to pro surfing with only 40 odd competitors in the one comp, it's going to stand out every time.......

Anyone know who's replacing Seabass ? Out with a knee injury apparently.

stunet Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 04:10 pm new

You're ahead of the WSL, Seabass is still listed as competing. Which doesn't really mean much either way and it certainly doesn't answer your question.

Juth thayin, eweete 'thlete sthurthees...??? Please, spare me. Big call, 'elite athlete'. Its easily and universally measurable. Big paychecks too. For those that measure up. Some universal measures are, how fast, how strong, how explosive, reflexes, and so on.

stunet Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:07 pm new

Terrible reflexes on that John John bloke....

uplift Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:13 pm new

Match them up against the worlds most elite athletes, easy to do. Other codes love it, do it regularly. I've actually seen that happen, a world champion surfer, 'famous' for his 'fitness' in that scenario. They actually tried that once. Remember that? Best not to. Hilarious shit. Never done it since. Ugly is a polite description.

Hang on alfred... gotta go... someone's on the other line!!!

goofyfoot Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:18 pm new

How would the most elite of the elite boxer, nfl player, ice hockey player go at 10 foot Chopes?
Just curious

udo Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:29 pm new

Would Danny Green go ?

uplift Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:42 pm new

Curious buffoons. Again, don't confuse the term 'elite athleticism' with skill. Elite athleticism has universally accepted measures. The skills of the individual sporting codes mentioned above, and pass times, like darts, golf, surfing, busking etc, are not used as measures of elite athleticism. They are specific skills.

goofyfoot Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:41 pm new

Not a chance

Wharfjunkie Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:42 pm new

Lebron James would dominate.

uplift Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:47 pm new

'Lebron James would dominate.'

Finally a semblance of intelligence... thank you junk. Lebron James does dominate universally accepted and tested measures of elite athleticism against entrants from all other codes.

Again its simple. Self proclaimed, although lowly paid, 'elite athlete' pro surfers just have to enter, and the publicity would be absolutely immeasurable... both ways. So they don't.

stunet Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 07:53 pm new

But...who could care? Besides glorified Port Lincoln PE teachers, that is.

My interest in surfing has nothing to do with athletes from various sports comparing vo2 max or who can touch their tippy toes. What's the point?

Rather just see someone get barrelled maaaaayyyte. Elite athletes or just Mick T on a twinny at Blax.

goofyfoot Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 08:16 pm new

Deluxe

Wharfjunkie Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 08:03 pm new

I would't consider any surfers as elite athletes Uplift just as well they are not paid to run fast and jump high. They are elite level surfers whom skill levels are greater than regular surfers and are paid accordingly.

The wages don't compare to Lebron James, Lionel Messi, DJ Ockavich or Mayweather because the surfing market isn't as big as other professional sports.

uplift Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 08:26 pm new

Oooowwwchhh!!! You bad boy, you bad arse alfred!!! And no, they aren't wharfjunkie.

But its what they care so much about, and market themselves as. And as Alfred points out, what's the point, again forgetting that he couldn't resist, or didn't know why he cared, or commented and posted and pointed out:

'Terrible reflexes on that John John bloke....'

Which again, is easily tested. Like other codes love to do. Those you mention with the paychecks enter those things and some love to test their elite athleticism against all comers.

stunet Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 08:34 pm new

uplift wrote:

So why keep raising the point here where no pro surfers are marketing themselves, and truth be told, you're the only one who refers to them as elite athletes?

Wharfjunkie Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 09:19 pm new

Reconsidering my thought's on this matter surfers do exhibit many athletic traits such as timing, reflexes, agility, power and stamina. These might be exhibited differently than more traditional athletic pursuits but they are all utilised to enable a surfer to ride a wave.

Professional surfers arguably do this activity better than everyday surfers and utilise modern training techniques to advance there athletic abilities so can therefore be considered elite athletes within their sport.
How does this compare to an elite basketball player it doesn't but Lebron James wouldn't be able to beat Phelps in a swimming race either.

Surfers could be considered elite athletes even though they could not play in the NFL or NBA. But in the end who really gives a fuck as long as they get as barrelled as Owen Wright did at Cloudbreak they are doing their job.

uplift Tuesday, 7 Jul 2015 at 09:26 pm new

Good grief junkie, you may wish to reconsider your reconsidered reconsidering.

Elite athleticism is measurable. And regularly is. Not by having the athletes from individual sports perform specific sporting skills from those sports, but by testing their pure athleticism. The very things you cite, and claim for the surfers, 'athletic traits such as timing, reflexes, agility, power and stamina. Plus more. All accurately measurable and comparable. Easy to prove.

Hard to know which activities you're talking about - but I'm assuming that's a compliment on the gym activities I do to sculpt myself; I can tell you're cut (or should that be chiselled) from the same cloth, so to speak.

Other than that, I'm just a generally fun lovin' guy. Surfing a variety of craft, appreciating the scenery down by the beach, workin' on my social media profiles.

What are your favourite activities?
