2021 Championship Tour finalised

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Form Guide

While you were watching Newy, the Woz were busy locking in the details for the contests through the second half of the year.

A surprise inclusion is Barra de la Cruz in Mexico, which infamously hosted a CT contest in 2006 when Rip Curl ran a Search event there under the moniker 'la Jolla' (the jewel). The waves pumped but the decision to expose the wave was laden with controversy.

See the graphic below for the whole calendar. All events are for Men and Women, including Teahupoo.

If all the events are held - and that's still a big if - there will have been ten events on the tour, making it similar to any other year.

Stu > "there will have been ten events on the tour, making it similar to any other year." - so this years title(s) will be deemed bona fide? Not CV19 aberrations? I vaguely remember CJ Hobgood's world title as being a 911 fudge? Might be wrong - apologies CJ if I am. > RR

Has anyone asked the Woz the following question:
In a possible scenario where a surfer wins all CT events or the majority of then and then loses in the Trestles final to the 5th place (or 4th, 3rd or whatever) overall which hasn't won any, would this Trestles Final winner be a legit World Champion?

Are they serious?

Billyw Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 08:39 pm new

do you think the team that wins the NFL/AFL grand final is the winner? if so then you have the answer. if not then grow up.

seaslug Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 12:15 pm new

So after the Rottnest Comp May 16 - 26, they have a bit of time to go travelling? Wonder where....

gm14 Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 12:19 pm new

Brazil to Tahiti in 6 days seems extremely ambitious in the current covid climate. something about a plane load of surfers and hanger-onners heading straight from the 80,000 cases per day of the "dangerous Brazil variant" to chopes with no "quarantine period" (or similar) seems like something that could potentially backfire

Craig Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 12:23 pm new

Surely they can do a weighting system/handicap depending on the amount of wins in the year once it finishes at Trestles.

IE if you win 7 events you get a 7 point advantage or similar in the Final?

Jono Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 12:40 pm new

Here ya go Craig, straight from the Woz...

The WSL Finals shall consist of the top five (5) men Surfers (based on the CT Ranking Points for the men following the last CT Event of the Surfing Season) and the top five (5) women Surfers (based on the CT Ranking Points for the women following the last CT Event of the Surfing Season) and the following format will be used:

(i) Round 1 is one (1) heat between the Surfer who placed 5th (based on CT Ranking Points following the last Regular Season CT Event of the Surfing Season) and the Surfer who placed 4th (based on CT Ranking Points following the last Regular Season CT Event of the Surfing Season), with the winner progressing to Round 2.

(ii) Round 2 is one (1) heat between the winner of Round 1 and the Surfer who placed 3rd (based on CT Ranking Points following the last Regular Season CT Event of the Surfing Season), with the winner progressing to Round 3.

(iii) Round 3 is one (1) heat between the winner of Round 2 and the Surfer who placed 2nd (based on CT Ranking Points following the last Regular Season CT Event of the Surfing Season), with the winner progressing to Round 4.

(iv) Round 4 is best of three (3) heats between the winner of Round 3 and the Surfer who placed 1st (based on CT Ranking Points following the last Regular Season CT Event of the Surfing Season), with the winner being crowned the World Champion.

Ah yeah sweet.

savanova Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 01:17 pm new

so the 5th placed surfer has to beat the top 4 in succession to win? Geez gonna be knackered by the time they go for the title.

lost Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 06:10 pm new

......and all in one day. The highest ranked surfer has a big advantage. You really wanted to be ranked 1st or 2nd to have a serious chance of winning.

Jono Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 09:41 pm new

If they can manage to pull it off in pumping surf, then it would be quite an entertaining few hours on the webcast. No grinding out days and days of heats, just high stakes elimination surfing by the top 5.

That La Jolla comp woz a crime. It filled me with lust and desire. Envy aninadequacy. Watched it recently some reason.

Nick Bone Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 12:44 pm new

Wonder if Kellys foot hurts in August?

seaslug Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 12:52 pm new

I'm sure it will have miraculously healed by then Nick

seaslug Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 12:54 pm new

I predict it will be healed by Mexico time, then come down with a tummy upset before Brazil but all good before Tahiti

seaslug Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 12:57 pm new

Oh shit I got it wrong, it will be healed by surf ranch time

walter-r-white Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 05:32 pm new

Subject to a positive Tahiti forecast, his foot will go from snapped in two during the Brazil window, to 100% for Tahiti.

"Honest , I ran out of gas . I had a flat tyre . I didn't have enough money for cab fare . My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town . Someone stole my car . There was earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts ....." blues brothers

JackStance Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 09:15 am new

There's 2 lawyers (A and B) sitting on the beach in Byron.

A: "what happened to you?"...
B "ah, lost everything in a fire. .. and you?"
A: "lost it all in a flood." ..
B "How'd you start a flood?"

indo-dreaming Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 07:34 pm new

That exposure of that Mexican wave really sucked was such a low act, but i am looking forward to watching that one.

Blingas Wednesday, 14 Apr 2021 at 08:05 pm new

They should do a double in Mexico and put in Puerto escondito would be good to see them charge those waves. Would make some of The Australian events look ...

goofyfoot Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 09:31 am new

Yeah Puerto would be great to watch. Above 8ft just hand it’ll the trophy to jjf

rrr Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 05:48 pm new

hell yea. that'd be 2 events really worth watching

fitzroy-21 Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 06:42 pm new

Meh, there's only 2 events I'll tune in for, and that will only be if the waves are good. Mecico and Chopes.

I might check Northy, but only for nostalgic reasons.

ringmaster Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 07:07 pm new

Your 'viewership' (or lack of) will be missed by all and sundry Fitzroy.

fitzroy-21 Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 07:29 pm new

Oh I'm sure the WSL will be just fine with their "millions" of "surf fans" tuned in watching their "elite athletes" perform in their "amazing world class waves"...

ringmaster Thursday, 15 Apr 2021 at 07:58 pm new

As long as it's far away from where I live I'm totally fine with it.

groovie Saturday, 17 Apr 2021 at 11:08 am new

In reference to CJ's world title it was 9/11(radiationrules) 2001? The ASP cancelled the tour & C.J. was in the lead @ the time. Love to see La Jolla(the Jewel) get waves like in The Search contest, that was awesome!

surfcarter Monday, 19 Apr 2021 at 01:20 pm new

its not a team sport its a individual competitor sport and if you have won the majority of the contests and have more points you should be the champion its called being consistently the best. This is all about sponsors dollars and viewing dollars its a crap idea in team sports you have a minor premier first past the post or best all year finals are about attrition and whos having the best day and made for $$$$$$$
