Forecast: 2025 Gold Coast Pro

Craig Brokensha (Craig)
Form Guide

Gold Coast Pro
May 3rd - 13th, 2025

This Saturday we’ll see the Gold Coast Pro return to Snapper Rocks...I mean Burleigh Heads.

With the WSL's return to the Gold Coast announced and anticipated, Tropical Cyclone Alfred threw a spanner in the works, rearranging the Superbank into a fragmented mess of a wave. A huge sand slug was dumped north of the point, creating a very poor right hander and slightly better left, while Snapper itself was stripped of sand, better for fishing than surfing.

The misshapen sand is slowly sorting itself out, however the WSL took early action knowing it wouldn't be ready in time. Thus the decision was made to move the event to Burleigh Heads and the quality of the bank there isn’t too shabby at all.

Burleigh sparkling (WSL)

So what’s in store for the coming event window?

Plenty of easterly trade-swell - possibly even too much at times - with multiple opportunities to run the event.

The source of the easterly swell will be a strong high pressure system filling out into the Tasman Sea later this week and into the weekend as a couple of low pressure troughs squeeze its north-eastern flank.

An initial surge of strong south-east winds through the Tasman Sea on Thursday and Friday should generate a good pulse of 3 foot mid-period south-east swell for Saturday, the opening day of the waiting period. Conditions will be clean through the early-to-mid morning with a gusty S/SW breeze, deteriorating from later morning as winds shift more south-east and strengthens.

Sand aside, the mid-morning wind switch will be the biggest difference between Snapper and Burleigh, with Snapper through to Rainbow better angled to handle a south-east wind than Burleigh with its more exposed headland.

As the weekend progresses, the strong high is due to continue moving slowly east, while tropical instability to the north will squeeze pressure gradients, setting up a broad, elongated fetch of easterly trade-winds that will slowly retract to the east along with the movement of the high.

This is a great setup to provide consistent, moderate levels of easterly trade-swell to the Queensland coast, with initially weak, low period energy on Sunday, again in the 3 foot range, expected to slowly strengthen and increase in size through next week.

At this stage we should see the trade-swell reaching 4-5 feet through early-mid next week and persisting at this size for the entire event window, though there’s the possibility for further intensifications which would boost the swell into the large size range. We'll keep a close eye on those developments so check back in.

As the high and easterly trade-fetch slowly retract to the east, local winds will back off in strength and become more favourable, though still following the general pattern of morning south-southwesterlies ahead of fresh afternoon south-easterlies.

The main question is, will the organisers get a quick start and run in smaller cross-shore surf this weekend, or focus on the better quality easterly trade-swell next week onwards? We're tipping more towards the latter than the former.

We’ll provide running updates on any upgrades in next week’s swell in the commentary below.

Thanks for the forecast, it really feels like this is the first time we’ve had a relatively promising one in about two years

Solitude Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 09:47 am

There will be waves, it’ll be consistent and I think that’s really all you need.

I do think the short period and fragmented nature of Burleigh may not necessarily lend itself to the traditional point surfers. I’m sure the air boys will be well in the mix.

Place looks quite deep on the high also. Beachie and cove seem to be able to handle it. Morning lows should coincide nicely with the lighter winds.

Should be an enjoyable one. Nice to see different locales. The Woz will dine out on drone shots of the headland and talle. Such a beautiful place. Thanks Craig.

zenagain Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 09:49 am

Should see the performance bar lifted for this comp, Very promising by the sounds of it.

Ethan and LOB to shine.

Kanoa will do well too.

BarbB Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 09:57 am

I guessed this wave was at Burleigh.

Be interesting to see how it pans out. The forecast is pretty much ideal if it were any other time and snapper had a decent sand set-up. Not sold on the state of burleighs banks, they look pretty horrible to me. Disjointed but long if that's a thing. Think it would prefer more SE angle on the swell to run along the bank more. E swell looks a bit straight onto the bank. Looking more like beachies style waves than point break. As mentioned elsewhere Burleigh has been a shadow of its former self for years now. Old school Burleigh would've been pumping on this
forecast.

Ape Anonymous Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 10:42 am

In my opinion, Burleigh likes the same swell direction as Needledicks -SSE.

thermalben Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 10:49 am

That's one of the more unusual surf spot parallels I've heard of.

Ape Anonymous Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 06:13 pm

Pretty trippy hey. Took me years to figure out that south misses the coast entirely, SSE misses Currumbin and turns snapper into a zoo with waves that aren't ideal, SE hits Currumbin, and any predominant East in the swell is dangerous -swell events always marked by injuries because it locks you into shallow sandbanks on repeat. Worth noting the similarity between backdoor barrel entries at both the entry to the cove and needledicks -starts off super small and jacks to overhead in an instant. So many crystal tubular memories -including a mystical bending white out dissapearing/reapperaring singlefin act on the afternoon of MPs funeral.

Ahhh yes, burleigh heads -the place to get punch by a junkie, face slam a turd and leave with an ear infection and foot cut. Shame that Wahoos Fish Tacos isnt open anymore.

burleigh Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 11:13 am

Forecast would have been incredible if snapper had banks. Unfortunately the banks at Burleigh are only just passable right now. Still there will be fun waves and the setup is HUGE. Going to be a fun weekend and i can't wait. Burleigh is a great place for a surf comp.

thermalben Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 11:24 am

Yeah I love Burleigh as a venue. I'm not into cricket, but it seems to have that same vibe as The Hill at Adelaide Oval.

basesix Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 01:29 pm

don't have to enjoy cricket to enjoy The Hill ; )
(whatta buzz, looking promising, cheers craig)

Roadkill Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 11:34 am

The crowds have arrived already. Italo apparently out yesterday early. I saw Kanoa this morning. Small fun waves around. Should be a lot of fun to watch.

newdog Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 11:40 am

Can't wait will be up there next week.

@Roadkill if staying at Cooly easier to just get a bus rather than drive and find parking?

burleigh Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 11:41 am

Yeah Newdoggy, get a bus 100% Parking will be torture.

Roadkill Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 11:58 am

100% bus. Parking is atrocious now. Lots of construction for the light rail has removed a lot of parking spots. Lots of diversions and lanes taken out is the current situation.
I got down this morning just before 5 and there was only a couple of parks left.

Ted from the moon Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 10:35 pm

Also at $0.50 each way its a bargain!

Standingleft Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 12:12 pm

I asked in the Bells thread, where are you going to go to find a better competition venue than Bells Beach?
Burleigh Heads - it was hectic fun back in The Stubbies days on the hill. The wave broke along the rocks then though..

Bob Hawke Surf Team Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 11:42 am

Funny how things change. Burleigh and Kirra were always the premiere breaks back in the day. Snapper, Rainbow and Greenmount were separate breaks and we would always hit Burleigh any chance we could get. I remember coming up from Broken for the Stubbies and it seemed such a big deal at the time.

Lanky Dean Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 10:42 pm

I've been visiting since 86
Will agree about the wave breaking next to the rocks . Epic memories........@ standing left .

memlasurf Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 01:00 pm

Wow low numbers on the swell 8 seconds? I have never seen a swell in VIC with those numbers, so are you reliant on deep water to the bank to give it a bit of oomph?

Craig Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 01:01 pm

The East Coast loves these mid-period swells, less continental shelf, loss of energy to bottom friction etc.

memlasurf Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 02:59 pm

What happens if you get a 17 sec monster.

Sprout Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 03:42 pm

It closes out the entire state.

memlasurf Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 03:49 pm

Ha, ha I am not sure if you pulling my leg or not however double the grunt would probably do it.

freeride76 Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 06:26 pm

Different game here Memla.

Swell direction and bathymetry far more important than swell periods.

We actually get quite a few glancing long period S swells but they rarely show much up here.

A straight E/SE to E/NE swell in the 8-10 second band slamming onto shallow sand bars will be far more impactful than a 17 second S swell.

Solitude Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 06:37 pm

We love an 8-10 sec around here.

freeride76 Tuesday, 29 Apr 2025 at 07:01 pm

Any swell direction with an E in it and a good bank = good surf

wavie Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 05:58 am

easter long weekend was a long period up on the sunnycoast, some people like them. i prefer the short period swells more peaks and more waves at my local. the long period made my local a right hand point break, way less waves coming through and when they did was pretty much one peak. easter crowd was mental too

Sheepdog Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 02:40 pm

Sup, FR. Do u know what state of the banks are at Currumbin? Surely that could be an option if Burleigh is shit? 4 to 5 foot behind the rock is a great wave

burzum Friday, 2 May 2025 at 01:08 pm

Crumblin? Terrible on all but the biggest swell. A short section behind the rock and then fatness for ever. Burleigh is a much better option.

dazzler Saturday, 3 May 2025 at 04:44 am

Currumbin is in poor state following Alfred & will take long time to recover.... massive hole next to the keyhole & barely breaking..

Straight & sectioning down the rest of the bank.

Water quality still poor on run out tide due to crazy amount of rain up the valley.. FYI Springbrook had nearly 1500mm of rain in March. Ground is soaked and any rain is simply running off.

Lanky Dean Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 11:12 pm

Some of those short trade swell feel very ....soft especially if you have been surfing in vic then head straight to the g c
Which I have done
It's almost hard to paddle into waves of that short a period , the super warm water makes everything feel soft...

memlasurf Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 10:42 am

Yeah that is what I have found, there is no white water after it has broken and they are gutless and hard to get on to as they lack push (except if it is exceptional) so you have to jump into them at the last - hollow and gutless minute - tricky when you aren't used to it. Sort of like a wave pool.

Craig Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 10:44 am

That sounds like high-tide, soft, low-period surf. Normal mid-period swells are 10x better than that.

memlasurf Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 10:56 am

What is low period up there Craig?

Craig Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 11:00 am

I'd say 6-7s, then there's a marked improvement in energy from 8-10s, with swells from 11s onwards coming in quite straight and lined up.

memlasurf Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 11:17 am

Sorry for all the questions as I am really intrigued by the difference. Does this hold for the entire east coast?

Craig Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 11:19 am

Yeah it does, it amazed me when moving from South Australia to the East Coast to see how well the lower-period swells performed.

memlasurf Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 12:11 pm

Thanks Craig so anything at or above 8-10 sec is the way to go for my next trip up the coast.

Craig Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 12:24 pm

Indeed.

Solitude Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 12:44 pm

You don't need above Memlasurf - maybe if all you want to surf is a particular point or reef. If you want variety 8-10'' is plenty. Most beach breaks shut down at periods 11'' or above.

memlasurf Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 02:19 pm

Yeah usually a point or reef I surf some good beachies all the time where I live so looking for a change of pace.

Coolum VIP Comp is run alongside Coolum Beach Flags & comes across as a nerdy poorer cousin.

Agree with sentiments above- would be an all-time f/cast for Snapper with what looks more like a good late Summer synoptic pattern.

Bank at Burleigh look serviceable but it will be more like a beachie than classic point surf- we may even see some lefts scored.

It won't handle too much size so hopefully there should be plenty of days in that sweet spot 3-4 (occ.5) ft range.

Clean slate as far as local knowledge or form goes.

My gut says Sammy Pupo- he will love those random, beachiue style waves with one or two big turns and a close-out air/hit.

Craig Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 05:56 am

Looks like the squeeze has backed off a little and will sit in that sweet spot of 3-5ft. Fun.

Kaipo was 2 in front if me getting coffee this morning. That guy is as juiced daily as he is on the wsl live streaming. Talking at 109 words per minute and every 3rd word was brah or bro. Friendly guy and we had a couple of words.
Walked back to the car and Italo was waxing his board. Quite a few young guys were fanboying out over him. After 10 pics for instagram the boys were happy and Italo along with his cameraman wandered down for a few waves. Italo was filmed from the carpark all the way to the paddle out. A good vibe down at the beach along with the odd competition hater down because “their” break has been taken over.

Got to say the infrastructure they have in place is huge.

Very weird situation for the Womens Wildcards.

Both Defay and Tati are gone for the season.

Nadia gets a season long replacement wildcard for Defay.

Ellie Harrison only gets one opportunity to replace Tati at Bells.

Luana Silva gets a season wildcard to replace Steph.

Can someone make that make sense?

Surely Ellie should get the opportunity to replace Tati until the cut, same as Nadia.

wavie Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 05:21 am

yea its weird who gets the wild cards, i could think of 5 more surfers that should of got it instead of jordy lawler, even though i dont mid it and think he could do well out there. Edit didnt realise how close he was last year to qualifying. but also thought that was his last run at trying to make a crack at it. from a views and marketing point i would of put julian wilson in

burly a shadow of what it used to be since they created the superbank . Everywhere north suffered palmy used to have the best beachies going round now once in a while and only briefly .

hamishbro Wednesday, 30 Apr 2025 at 07:38 pm

The question is, why? What’s the science behind it?
I would prefer the old setup personally. Spreads the crowds better.

memlasurf Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 10:52 am

There was an article on swellnet that explained it all: can have a super bank or great kirra but not both for sand pumping. Not sure how this would effect burleigh.

scott.kempton Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 02:08 pm

ask any long time burly local they’ll say the same thing , before the superbank burly was the premier break with consistent cove and rocky and then kirra when it got bigger and the winds had east in if . Palmy was out the back low tide , shories on high call it coincidence but that’s tbd way it went .

Can’t help but think the consistency will favour Italo and Filly and let the cream rise to the top. Fil is pissed and will be in his element (4ft, 8secs). Italo will be scary. It’ll take one of the big boys to stop either of em.
Plugging for LOB and Ethan, go boys! Jack looked crazy at snapper and Griff will be rampaging. Stacked comp even without GM/JF.

wavie Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 05:25 am

Craig Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 06:52 am

Just a small update.

Saturday's SE swell looks good and to 3ft+ along with gusty morning offshores, shifting S/SE through the afternoon (a full surf day).

The swell will ease a little into Sunday but still likely be 3ft with similar morning winds, less favourable and gusty SE into the afternoon (maybe half a day competition).

Localised E/SE trade-swell in the 3ft+ range for early week looks to ease Tuesday afternoon, bottoming out Wednesday ahead of some new, stronger E'ly trade-swell from Thursday to a good 4ft, holding into next weekend.

Local winds will follow the similar S/SW tending fresh SE pattern early next week, fresher S/SW tending S/SE Thursday/Friday.

With this we could see competition ran again Monday/Tuesday mornings, likely a lay day Wednesday, then finishing off next Thursday/Friday.

geoffrobertford Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 07:06 am

Wow that would be epic - just smash it out without the usual delays and multiple lay days

Italo spent 20 mins with his photographer taking pics on the beach this morning. Carolin Marks turned up, 3 parks down from me, with Cole Houshmand and a photographer. Cole has had his hair retouched to his spotty patched style and was rocking his faith over fear rashie. I’m guessing one of them is sponsored by Kia as the car was brand spanking new. Portuguese was the predominant language in the lineup…the brazzos out surfing were a good bunch of people. Friendly and all were chatty and we all had fun.

It was windy early and a 2ft wave was about as good as it got.

freeride76 Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 08:19 am

How's it breaking through the tidal range RK?

Roadkill Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 09:45 am

Getting fatter and you need to move more north away from the point. I didn’t see too much as I had to leave for work. The increase in swell should move it back towards the point.

Disclaimer…I am a very poor weather/swell forecaster.

Solitude Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 12:46 pm

I saw it last weekend on the high when there was that east swell in the water. Beach break was really good and a few out at the cove - in between not so much...........

Sprout Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 09:19 am

Old mate that live streamed Kirra, live at Burleigh.

Lanky Dean Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 01:50 pm

How's the commentary !

southernraw Thursday, 1 May 2025 at 04:42 pm

Last time i went to a comp at Burleigh was the year Sunny went into a rage on that local fella after he'd had a little biff with Sunnys son i think. If i recall Jeremy Flores was involved. I was getting one of those free milks they hand out halfway along the point and heard a commotion, and everyone racing towards the beach, so naturally followed and next minute Sunny comes steaming through the crowd, literally steam coming out of his ears and lazer beams for eyes. The seas parted. No one was getting in his way. Looked like Mike Tyson. Can't remember what the comp was. Maybe a Q.
Was good to see the notorious Sunny in his psycho mode at least once in my life!
Hope he's doing alright these days.

Lanky Dean Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 10:24 pm

What flavour breaker ? Did you get @ southernraw .

Windy early but glassed over about 7ish. 2 ft with the occasional 3ft on the sets.
Lots of people out and not as friendly as yesterday. More serious stuff and a little hustle for waves.

Craig Friday, 2 May 2025 at 08:39 am

Looks packed!

JD 72 Monday, 5 May 2025 at 06:33 pm

Forecast update guys are they on hold until Thursday?

Lanky Dean Tuesday, 6 May 2025 at 01:40 pm

Random question for @ craig re Tradewinds,
Why do the slacken off at sunset into night . What causes this phenomenon?

Craig Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 03:54 pm

That'd be due to terrestrial, land breeze effects kicking in once the sun dips below the horizon. IE cooler land than ocean, trying to override the synoptic trade-flow, which it ends up doing early morning if the trades are weak enough.

Lanky Dean Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 10:36 pm

Thanks Craig,
Next question...trades were always N E in newy growing up.
What directions are trades at burleigh
More east or pending?
Think I'm driving this one more towards an article. Hint hint!

Craig Thursday, 8 May 2025 at 07:27 am

Ah that all depends on the position of the subtropical high. Further south winds shift more E and then NE as you head towards Victoria.

Lanky Dean Friday, 9 May 2025 at 01:31 pm

thanks Craig!

More tubes please Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 11:15 am

Any update on the forecast for the weekend? Will the bank hold anything over 3ft? Haha

freeride76 Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 11:34 am

Likely chunky 3-5ft- bank should be Ok.

Solitude Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 03:33 pm

The original forecast didn’t age well, I guess that’s the East coast for ya.

Craig Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 03:52 pm

Reckon? Still looking solid in the final days with a bit of down time between.

Solitude Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 06:02 pm

‘ At this stage we should see the trade-swell reaching 4-5 feet through early-mid next week and persisting at this size for the entire event window, though there’s the possibility for further intensifications which would boost the swell into the large size range’

…..sorry Craig, not a crack at you at all. Just a comment on the dynamic and constantly changing east coast Synoptics………..

Craig Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 08:21 pm

Ah yes true. The initial strong flow was delayed.

Solitude Wednesday, 7 May 2025 at 08:45 pm

Haha yeah. I’m only sour for personal reasons, the original chart for this week had looked so good! Ah well, keeps us on our toes.

Go surf barrels elsewhere, anyway ...
