Mid Coast Regional Surfing Reserve - public meeting

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

The Mid Coast Regional Surfing Reserve aims to protect breaks and sites from 'The Hump' at Southport to 'The Trough' at Moana.

For many, the Mid Coast is where they first started surfing and is seen as worth protecting.

So come along and find out how we may celebrate and recognise the significance of the region.

The meeting is at 7pm Thursday 30th January at Arts Centre, Gawler Street, Port Noarlunga

If you've got any suggestions or comments email Dick Olesinski (Olly): ecomarketing@senet.com.au or Bill Jamieson: WJamieson@onkaparinga.sa.gov.au

At last, and wonderful to see.

Yes the West Coast of SA does have waves, plenty of them and in abundance. But the mid, 'The Magic Mid' as it is often referred to has always been this wonderful collection of sand and reef breaks. The mid may not be world class day in day out, but on it's day, it's a sight to behold.

Bravo Dick & Bill. I only hope the SA surfing community get behind this wonderful initiative with gusto.

To have a Regional Surfing Reserve, surely having Surf on a regular basis would be a requirement?

What do these "breaks" need protecting from?

the label of a 'regional surfing reserve' is perhaps a touch exaggerated in my opinion. 'regional fat- 1 foot-hassle- fest reserve' would be a title considerably more appropriate to the magical mid coast. However, any policies in place which help to preserve Australia's coast cannot be a bad thing and the mid at least helps us Adelaidians to get some waves and refrain from taking up less constructive hobbies such as model airplane flying or lurking near public restrooms, so good luck with it for all those who attend the meeting. Yet another prime example of SA going all the way.

The Mid is the reason behind me taking up model training 40-plus years ago. For that reason alone it should be deemed a national treasure. Much like meself.

What is the reserve hoping to protect it from? Between southport and moana is mainly cliff with the odd beach so not really used by anyone but dog walkers and surfers.

Not sure what the aim is UpNorth - best off emailing Olly (contact deets in the article above) and he'll be able to shed some more light on things. I can't imagine there's much to worry about from a development point of view - perhaps it's more an acknowledgement of the Mid Coast as an important part of the SA surfing scene?

Wouldn't be a bad thing, there will be plenty of people who caught their first wave at Moana, myself included, or have driven down for a post work surf on one of those 40C days. Good times.

What is the reserve hoping to protect the Mid from? Go to the meeting on the 30th and find out.

Enough with the nonsensical posts already.

To me, It just seems like keeping up with the Joneses.. "Yorkes has got a National Surfing Reserve, we need one on the Mid". The difference being, that Yorkes actually has some pretty decent natural beauty worth protecting..

God forbid anyone change the layout of the Moana carpark... It should be nominated as the 8th wonder of the world.

Maybe there are secret plans to build a bridge from KI to the Tip of Yorkes, ruining what Meagre swell the mid does attract?

What's the problem stray gator? Seemed a reasonable question to me. You pay for my flight to and from Adelaide and I'll happily attend the meeting.

Here's a spotting clue or two for the upcoming night...standing up the back, straggly bottle blonde hair, stoned as, swaying gently in the image breeze. Here's a suggested publicity slogan...'Come and surf the Mighty Mid, home of the famous ice cold Stormy' that one will keep the Wicked Vans away...
