Kirra gone mad

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Little needs to be said at this stage; everyone knows Kirra broke for the best part of a week and looked as good as it has in years.

The Mad Hueys were both in front of and behind the lens. Check this vid for a highlights reel whittled down to a slim nine minutes.

jaunkemps Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 12:52 pm new

kaiser Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 01:07 pm new

Did anyone else see the same three waves three times over?

7:55... Biting the hand that feeds

How good was Hipwood's form? Surfed it like he's conjuring it as he goes.

memlasurf Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 02:22 pm new

Incredible I wonder what the sweep was like, serious I bet no wonder the pros were getting the chairlift out the back whilst the schleppers had to paddle it.

deathstar Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 02:49 pm new

how do they get away with using skis out there???

udo Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 04:04 pm new

The great MP was looking down.....nice tuberiding boys...........
but if you cant paddle it and have to use a ski you shouldn't be out there aye .

staitey Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 04:25 pm new

8:00 parko shame……………..

mr mick Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 08:17 pm new

the sweep wasn't too bad. what was bad was the 6 skis running back & forth & not giving me a lift!! parko gets a GREAT wave, on the ski straight back out & launched off the ski onto a bomb. but then those guys don't get to surf many great waves do they?
what pisses me? on a great wave & dropped in on by a tow in. f#*k the pros!

howiemonsta Thursday, 4 Sep 2014 at 08:09 pm new

Mate I totally agree with the sentiment on the skis over that great week of waves. Skis should be banned from Kirra. I'm sure some of the guys getting waves in those vids were pilfering way more than their share due to ski assistance and it was completely ridiculous how close they were getting to paddlers. They were even ruining waves by driving over them so the first few waves of the set were ruined for paddling surfers then their mate would hope of the back and get the last wave. If that wasn't enough I was almost run over by one screaming down the face of a wave only about 25mtrs from the end of Big Groyne. The driver saw me but it was only 2-3 mtrs away when we crossed paths and he was redlining the ski to beat the barrel breaking behind him. Then I got a bomb down the end where they were all kind of waiting and locked in to probably the best barrel I have ever had out there only to have a ski come down on the shoulder and drop a guy onto the wave. Needless to say I had no option but to drill it into the black hole as a huge foam ball shut down what should have been a gaping exit ! Skis should be banned unless its code black or something ! Down at the pin yeah go for it but not at Kirra or anywhere else where a large contingent of people are still paddling. It needs to be policed and signed and whatever it takes to deter them. I notice the J-Bay comp had no skis....

udo Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 08:23 pm new

Mr Mick were those skis breaking the Qld law re safe distance from swimmers and surfers ?

leckiep Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 08:25 pm new

So is this bank the result of the groyne extension or whatever was started to 'bring back kirra'? Or is it just luck?

mr mick Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 08:41 pm new

well, if within 50 meters of surfers is inside the safe distance law, i guess they were.
my drop in mate was about 20 meters ahead of me.

udo Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 06:15 am new

QLD MARITIME- jet ski laws-No more than 6 knots within 200 metres of surfers

Hmm not good hope it dosent take a major accident or death before the authorities act.

caml Tuesday, 2 Sep 2014 at 09:43 pm new

More like mp was looking down saying fucken skis ruining it

Craig Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 10:12 am new

Kaiser, yep, saw a few repeated waves in there, Mick's, Dingo's and maybe a couple of others?

freeride76 Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 11:56 am new

surprised no-one made a complaint to qLD maritime or waterways or whoever the governing body is.
with video footage as evidence they would be compelled to act on any complaints re: jetskis in the line-up.

udo Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 12:09 pm new

Exactly Freeride ,lots of surfers out there during that swell wining about the skis .....undisputable video evidence for charges to be laid.
Do they tow at your pointbreak Freeride ?

sseven Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 12:17 pm new

Although I totally agree with everyone about the skis. Are we really turning into the people who call the cops, post the fact, to have a whinge?

freeride76 Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 02:48 pm new

No they don't Udo.

Complaints to waterways and then shut down by the Marine Park.

no tow.

memlasurf Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 02:57 pm new

When they get any near where I surf they are told to vacate in very robust terms by the local populace. Is there an arsehole mentality to some of the pros? It seems a bit rich that someone like Joel P can come back from surfing his rear end off all over the world then drop what seems a rather large turd on his local break and piss everybody off. Sseven I wonder what would happen if someone went up to JP and explained the issues would it make any difference or would you get a wee birdie with his mates egging him on. Seems like some sort of rough code of conduct should be agreed on. If you can't paddle that break don't go out.

mick-free Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 03:13 pm new

I'm not torturing myself watching another video of Kirra.

My understanding of the beaches up there is once the lifeguards close the beach you can operate the skis, but they have to be operating in the terms of maritime rules as per Udo. They will fine your arse if you break the rules.

Andrew Kidman went spastic on this issue a few years back, but obviously nothing has changed.

dromodreamer05 Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 04:19 pm new

Hey Fuck this I'm towing Noosa, I'm sure donweather won't mind at all if I do, and besides I don't like jelly fish...

mr mick Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 06:52 pm new

6 knots hey udo? well it was open throttle out there, can't waste a second hey!!
anyway heard on the grapevine an elder & well respected statesman who still charges out there & is a local gave a few of them a mouth full about their ways, wonder if it will make a difference. there's a few unimpressed surfers around that's for sure.

udo Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014 at 07:26 pm new

Well done to that elder !

evo62 Friday, 5 Sep 2014 at 12:28 pm new

I see the footage of Dean Morrison jumping off the ski and belting some punter in the face for calling them out on being greedy didnt make the highlight reel.

udo Friday, 5 Sep 2014 at 06:02 pm new

Evo that footage, who shot it ? if that assault happened then in my old school ways its punch on time eye for an eye......deep inside me Im hoping Dingo Morrison would not act like that, did you witness it ?

mk1 Friday, 5 Sep 2014 at 02:43 pm new

Early afternoon Friday at Kirra I saw a dropper-innerer turn and tackle the guy he was fading (on a small inside one). Still don't quite have my head around that but assume something was going on further up the line I wasn't witness too (!?!). Both guys surfed good and definite words were said in the aftermath so it wasn't a couple of mates as I first thought.

Pity about that kiwi/brazzo rugby tackle clip now, I'm thinking it may have started something.

evo62 Friday, 5 Sep 2014 at 05:55 pm new

Udo,

Poor choice of words, dont know if there was footage but there were enough people recording, someone must have it somewhere. I saw it while watching from the hill (but didnt know who it was- found out later).

The video doesn't really show what a shitfight it is in that whole area when the swell is good.

G'day Gents. Ahhhhh, this brings a wee tear to an ol' boys' eyes. Nice stuff. It's a wider / more open ocean wave than back in the day, and she had a more square bottom when she ran more in-tight, methinks. but, Great to see the old girl smokin'.

Just to hear the word butterbox pulls on Sid's heart strings, thanks FreeR.

... best wishes from high in the Aussie Ozarks, Sid.
