Drops were insane and shape of the wave so nice! Looks super shallow on the inside though, boiling and ledging everywhere.
On an inferior surf forecasting website whose name we don't dare to speak on swellnet, reference was made (in one of Sean Doherty's comp wrapup articles) to a right hander beachbreak where JJF took 'one of the gnarliest waves anyone had ever seen' and Kolohe got a stupid tube then stomped a mega alley oop. Anyone know where the footage is?

Kelly definitely is going for the thicker heavier ones but the other guys get much better barrels. Looks a bit like ours but all together a better set up.

Actually Cave is a portuguese word as well and it means Basement.
It's not the one you're thinking about... It never really had any other name...
Hardly ever ridden, like many other "killer" waves, bodyboarders were the first ones surfing it on a regular basis, still hardly ever ridden by surfers, it requires a high QS or CT level to be ridden.
As far as I'm concerned, most waves should remain unnamed, but greedy attention-seeker pros and media whores have made it an utopic reality.
The Portuguese surfers will regret all this hype and publicity very dearly in the near future.
Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Certainly looks like a place that I knew by another name, but hey my memory ain't what it used to be. But since I agree with not naming spots, I guess we'll never know!
Also, i think you've somewhat underestimated the ability of non-comp (QS/WCT) surfers there mate! Plenty of crew round here (and probably any other given locale) would charge that happily and have never pulled on a conest singlet in their lives, except for maybe club comps if the waves were good enough.
'Portuguese surfers ...' hah, don't make me laugh! Most that I remember were firmly in the 'me me me, look at me and how amazing I surf' camp, particularly in the carpark! And only at sand bottom breaks. Aside from Abilio, hope he's still charging.
There's a few photos of old chargers, though no-one called Abilio, in Surfline's recent Spot Check of 'the other wave'.
Not surprised, Abilio and I used to share waves in another part of the country to where (I think) that wave is. And are you calling me old?

Your impression of Portuguese surfers must be highly outdated and, surely, you're not pretending to know every surf spot and their crews? That practically equates to the generalisation "brazzos are only able to perform in slop and are affraid of big waves"... ridiculous, hey?
In my travels I found that there are very interesting little pockets of surf culture and though the performance level on average isn't quite as high as in some other parts of the world, some guys actually impress by charging despite said limited "performance levels". I remember being absolutely gobsmacked in one remote area seeing some guys out in 10ft surf that could barely do a proper take-off and bottom turn!!!
As for Abílio, yes he still charges, but you're wrong as to where wave is from and certainly not from his part of the country.
Portugal has been on the map lately and surf evolution there is on steroids, with some kids sure to come up in the future, the downside (and there's always some...) is that such an abrupt fast forward is sure to mess up their surf culture and over crowd their line-ups. After all it's a fairly small country with less area (and coastline) than Australia's state of Victoria!
As usual, the greedy corporations couldn't care less (despite their fancy advertisements) and will squeeze it for everything it's worth. The compliant local surf leeches will only be too happy to sellout their countrymen's peace and spots for easy and fast commercialisation. Fuck them, surf whores would sell their mother for profit and visibility.
Surf culture isn't Pro-surf culture, which is actually quite destructive of culture in itself. But it's easy to prey on weak economies and affable people.
