Surf Music in Paradise - Tex Perkins in the Maldives
Last year The Perfect Wave travel company introduced the Surf Music in Paradise concept with Donovan Frankenreiter playing a series of gigs at Kandooma Resort in the Maldives. Next year The Perfect Wave extends its range with Tex Perkins taking the stage, playing a series of three gigs over the course of a week again at Kandooma Resort.
Surf the rights of Kandooma by day - or Tucky Joes, or Riptides, or wherever is best - and later kick back and listen to Tex as he takes the microphone at sunset. Each set will be drawn from Tex's extensive back catalogue including Beasts of Bourbon, Tex, Don and Charlie, the odd Johnny Cash cover, or most fittingly, The Cruel Sea.

I probably shouldn't mention Stu calling Tex a seedy lounge crooner that jumped the shark a couple of decades ago should I ?

Seedy lounge crooner? I didn't say that. I said he was a less edgy version of Kamahl.
But then I saw him play with Dark Horses and all the good memories came rushing back. Forgot how much the big fella could fill a room, strut the stage, and bellow a tune. Walked out of that gig feeling a bit silly about the Kamahl jibe. "Fortunately no-one will remember what I wrote," I said to myself by way of consolation.
And almost no-one did.
I really dig Tex's stuff. Came in late with the Beasts of Bourbon (and never saw the Cruel Sea) but I've seen a few solo and/or Dark Horses shows and they've been incredible. Quite a wide repertoire.

Yeah I know TCS's stuff reasonably well - just never saw them live (and that's been one of Tex's strengths IMO - his incredible stage presence). Would have been nice to see TCS live just to see how he differentiated their music from what I've seen him do with the Beasts and Dark Horses.
Cruel Sea Rule... Residual teen angst was responsible for more than a few crew missing out on this slice of Oz surf music gold.
Nicely fielded Ben. It sucks if you've got to compromise your personal opinions for business but it's the world we live in. It's a juggling act and so far you've managed to keep all your balls in the air. Well done and good luck with that.
I saw Tex with The Beasts Of Bourbon half a dozen times and The Low Road is still worth a good long listen. I only saw The Cruel Sea once and it was very disappointing. The sound was poor and it was all a bit lacklustre but The Honeymoon Is Over is a classic track. I would think he would be a pretty entertaining solo artist. He also had a pretty good reputation around the traps for being down to Earth even at the peak of his popularity.
BTW. I think Tex is running as an independent candidate for next weeks victoria election, mostly to bring attention for funding of restoration of the Palais theatre.
Saw the Cruel sea once, good but not brilliant but to be fair was at an early big day out not always the best gigs, The honey moon is over is a great record through, really like a record with a few instrumentals thrown in there to mix things up.
As for the article just seems like another add for a surf travel agent that just fuel lineups with crowds in return for $$$.
I went to see the cruel sea in freo in the early nineties and they were brilliant and also the beasts in newy a few years ago which was also great!
Some of the best gigs I've ever seen are the Beasts live. Just about every time I do a shed clean-up I will have The Low Road at full noise. They would be one of my top 10 Aussie bands, top 5 live. Awesome.
Fangin' Hoons would have to be one of the best driving songs of all time!
Many a trip down Johanna way and beyond....this was a staple.
