I hear they called the competition off. Look, I am not into competitions but that must have been a colossal fuck up (again). Surely, they have the ocean savvy skills to sit out the wind for an hour just incase it backs off - the potential was obviously there. Supposedly it was a bit windy beforehand. Or didn't they want a piece of it? Too dangerous? Again, it makes me wonder. I mean, I wouldn't be out there but then again they are the "best in the world" and I am at the opposite end of that spectrum. Nevertheless, please explain? It looks goddamn tubular.
Most of the waves in this video would've been filmed after 4pm anyway. Hawaii have stringent rules which prevent a surf comp from running past 4PM (or before 8am), so the heats couldn't have run during the best part of the day anyway. When they called the comp off, the surf was absolutely rubbish. Even if they had called it back on at 3pm when it cleaned up they would've only got 2 heats run.
Yeah, I see. The regular surfing probably better to watch anyway.
Can I side with the ASP a moment? Up until 2pm only two surfers had scored over ten points for a two wave total. People were winning heats with 4 points, it wasn't pretty. And so they called it off - the wrong decision as it happened.
But it was only that the trade wind changed direction ever-so-slightly that it became surfable, and that's a fricken hard to element to forecast.
OK.
A simple wet finger held up into the air to determine what the next hour had in store would have sufficed. Surely? Or marching an old sailor down to the shoreline and having him tell you what his bones felt like? I mean, such methods have worked for eons.
You folks might think to do a little research on personal and professional liability insurance contracts before advising others to risk their lives in dangerous conditions - when shit happens these days people sue ....
Seem stupid to call it off completely for any day at a place like pipe which can turn on and off at the drop of a hat. They should run everyday on standby
Wouldn't they have insurance cover and/or sign waivers? Risk is their game, no?

Sounds like the best day is going to be the day after the waiting period finishes. Unbelievable....
Some of those waves weren't from that session. I watched pretty much from 2oclock onwards and I can't recall a single backdoor wave made and hardly any ridden. I guess if they'd called it on at 1.30 they may have got around 8 heats done with back to back but they wanted fairness for all the contenders which meant getting 12 heats done.
