Mavericks Goes Massive - video

Craig Brokensha (Craig)
Swellnet Dispatch

Mavs might not be cliché California, but there is no denying that it's the king of the coast. The XXL beast showed some fang over the weekend on the first real day of the 2014-2015 big-wave season.

Bloody Hell.....Super impressive

sypkan Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 at 12:30 pm new

yep very impressive,

after seeing that crowd Im not convinced those trying to reduce exposure to cold water big wave spots are being paranoid

john wise Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 at 01:25 pm new

how many of those guys didnt get a sniff at a wave

Being brave never compensated for being foolish and there was some pretty foolish behaviour on offer there. They really need to bring in some sort of self regulating procedures similar to hang gliding so that both surfers and conditions are rated and if the ratings don't match there is strong peer pressure not to do it.

thermalben Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 at 01:54 pm new

A rating system for surf conditions? Trust me, you don't wanna go there.

Rabbits68 Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 at 02:05 pm new

BB sounds good in theory but the reality of having a chop off point that stops someone being able to surf certain conditions just sounds very tricky. But in the meanwhile someone will probably die due to the mayhem at such locations.

blindboy Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 at 02:15 pm new

I suppose it would create a precedent that could be abused but it would be voluntary with only peer pressure to discourage the unready and only at the extreme end of the size spectrum. The alternative is for the major big wave spots to go down the path of the major peaks where you have large numbers of climbers not up to the necessary standard and ever increasing fatalities. Maybe more of them just need to read a bit about Greg Noll and know the point at which they should stop, presumably well under the 35ft mark.

BB from what your saying it sounds like the mountaineers haven't been able to solve the issue of overcrowding yet?

The thing I'm surprised about in relation to your point BB is that it sounds like your suggesting there are a significant numer of surfers tackling these big spots that are under prepared & not skilled enough. Why hasn't anyone been significantly injured or killed as yet (that I'm aware of anyway)? Pure luck??

Some cool drone footage of the double wipeout, gets super close to the pitching lip at the end as well!

wally Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 at 03:51 pm new

And as the surf footage ends, the bloke going right pops up for air as he goes over the falls backwards.
'So far it's not been too bad', he thinks briefly to himself.

Craig Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 at 04:00 pm new

Ha, yep, didn't notice that, heavy.

blindboy Tuesday, 23 Dec 2014 at 03:22 pm new

Luck and the presence of jet skis to haul them out after they fall! The crowd at Jaws and Mavericks seems to be rising exponentially and even if fatalities are currently low, they happen and are likely to increase out of proportion to the crowd increase. The other issue is a bit tougher but the more people there are out there the fewer well surfed waves we see. I didn't see one wave that went close to the performance potential of the waves on offer. The paddle in thing has sort of back fired I think. At least when it was all tow the cost factor and the need to have a partner with some faith in their ability tended to limit numbers.

Tom Lowes drop was insane. Can't imagine how much you would be buzzing after that

blindboy Wednesday, 24 Dec 2014 at 06:19 pm new

Not at all just post a photo of yourself at the Right or Cow Bommie at quintuple overhead and I will agree with anything you say........about big waves!

Rabbits68 Wednesday, 24 Dec 2014 at 06:39 pm new

Ha!! Yeah I must admit I seem to have technical problems with my GoPro on those big days :-)

blindboy Wednesday, 24 Dec 2014 at 06:48 pm new

.....but what are you like with photoshop?

Rabbits68 Wednesday, 24 Dec 2014 at 08:38 pm new

Put it this way, when friends & family come over & checkout the pics up around the house they are constantly amazed how much travel I do & that I surf such a variety of waves :-)
