Kirra: dedicated to Mars - video

Ben Matson (thermalben)
Swellnet Dispatch

Kolohe, Jordy, Dingo and Gabriel Medina - plus a bunch of locals and travellers - rack up some serious barrels at Kirra. Oh, and Marcia - the tropical cyclone that approached the Queensland coast as this swell made landfall - is a female name derived from Latin meaning 'dedicated to Mars'.

Were are of these waves caught with the assistance of a tow?

morris Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 06:56 am new

Yeah, all waves were well into , to the uneducated observer you would say no jetskis even sitting in the channel, but I doubt thats the case.

Just a recommendation to the film maker for next time. Zoom out a touch. It's too close/zoomed in to fully appreciate the surfer surfing the wave IMO.

Craig Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 11:04 am new

Gotta disagree Don, I like this tight angle, you can see how critical the wave is and the fine tweaks of the riders to make those barrels.

I surfed Kirra yesterday at the peak of the swell and didn't see any jet ski tow-ins. There were plenty of jet skis in the water but they were just doing taxi drop-offs from the end of Kirra back to the top of the lineup. Wish the pricks would have picked me up when I was paddling no where fast!

thermalben Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 08:58 am new

Ah just taxi drop offs! That's ok then...

floyd Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 09:29 am new

@ ben, what about having a NTW certification policy then?

NTW = No Towed Waves at paddle in breaks will be shown on this website!

The film maker will have to certify it to be the case before you agree to load it up.

thermalben Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 09:35 am new

Yeah, nah.

Soon you'll be asking for a signed certificate that every WOTD barrel was completed with a dry hair exit.

floyd Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 10:26 am new

So, who has been shooting video of me then? I'm calling my lawyers!

lukerips Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 09:53 am new

I hope they were wearing their PFD's for the taxi runs. Where are the dogs when you need them.

Some good banter on Dingo's insta last night following a post by darkshadow media of him burning a bloke and his rant on blow ins. Even king Kobes got in on the action.

Jordy's hook to barrel. Whoa!

tonebone Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 09:19 am new

I know of a few guys burnt by the 'taxi drop offs'. Whiz them right into the take off and straight onto a set wave that unfortunates had been paddling their rings off to get to! But I suppose they have their WSL burn license in their key pocket....

Rabbits68 Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 10:42 am new

Cheers Tonebone for telling the rest of us how it actually was. That would suck & the people that think it's all good, open up your other eye...

brutus Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 09:38 am new

so tonebone when the WSL is not in town there are no skis??

Why don't you film the skis and go to the SLSC people then ..a current affair.....and show all the illegal shit that goes on...!

tonebone Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 11:10 am new

Well, unless it's maxing out and virtually unridable, don't really see that many skis out there. The last week hasn't been that big, the sweep not that strong due to swell direction, and if an old prick like me can get waves on a short board (I'm round your age Brutus) I just wonder why some of these pros feel the need to use them and burn locals and non locals alike. From what I can see some of them don't care who you are or whether you can surf or not, if you've been paddling your ring off for 15 minutes to keep on the 'nugget' and finally a bombs coming your way, if they can rip round on their ski, jump off with speed and 2 stroke into it 10 meters before you, they're going without batting an eyelid on the way past. After all they've got their burn ticket in their back pocket. Cheers

brutus Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 11:22 am new

Tonebones,I just don't think that the Pros can differentiate between locals/blowins.....

dropins are part of surfing in crowds now......Winki is a classic example of surfers having the blinders/blinkers on.....I can only imagine what the G C is now...it was bad enough in the 80's......

and as the crowds increase.....fark I am now riding an 8 0 at Bells just so I can catch waves.......

tonebone Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 11:27 am new

ps Brutus, haven't got a camera, hate the SLSC, and since when has a current affair had anything to do with reality? and you get back to the shaping bay, you've probably got people waiting!

Beagle Tuesday, 24 Feb 2015 at 04:24 pm new

Say what you will about drop-ins, skis etc but that turn by Jordy at 1:26 was absolutely nuts.

criso Friday, 27 Feb 2015 at 04:59 pm new

Holy jinggoes so many good tubes, just imagine you lived in perth and had to watch these kirra, snapper videos and just knowing that no matter how much you wish, dream, and pray your local beachie will never ever get anywhere as good as those waves. A man can only handle so much before he starts loosing it AAAHHHRRRRRGGGG

udo Saturday, 28 Feb 2015 at 08:11 pm new

Seems Jordy had the hide to burn the same local surfer 3 times in one session
Sean Dohertys brother.....3 times .....Jordy you African swine.
