A how to vid of the current world professional surfing champion manscaping.

Yes, you won't get those precious minutes back.

Blowin Tuesday, 17 Mar 2015 at 12:21 pm new

Tell me this isn't happening.

All of a sudden a world champ that operates as a functioning drunk has lost the wooden spoon for lifestyle choice.

memlasurf Tuesday, 17 Mar 2015 at 12:48 pm new

Just thank your lucky stars they didn't want him to shave his pubes!

Word on the street is that he has a mangina.

burgsurfer Tuesday, 17 Mar 2015 at 01:42 pm new

Jeepers creepers! Our (surfers) world champ shaves his body... shaves his tits.... How embarrassing. The only worse thing was Kelly Slater on Babe Watch.

Bloody hell! What was he thinking, seriously doesnt matter how much you get paid. Would he wipe his butt for toilet paper sponsor... His Manager should be fired.

Keiran Perrow, mate it's time to get your street cred back after he cut you down live on WSL. Ban him from competing in the next 3 events for bringing embarrassment on the sport and on WSL.

Thank goodness it wasn't an Aussie pro! Go Brazzos!!!

scottishsponger Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 09:14 am new

He's saying the derogatory term "that's so gay" is only used by knuckle-dragging cretins who think that anything remotely associated with femininity makes you less of a "man" and what's worse might even mean you're attracted to people of the same sex. These homophobes think that being gay would make you less of a man because in their narrow field of vision all gay men are weak, pathetic pansies who preen themselves religiously, drink light beer and don't eat meat etc, etc ,etc (insert offensive, comment about men who don't conform to the Aussie, macho status quo, deriding them as some kind of feminine/homosexual stereotype)

sandcastle Tuesday, 17 Mar 2015 at 09:30 pm new

Gentleman,

I'm Brazilian, not shaved or waxed and follow religiously swellnet forums. But this post/video is something that I never though I would be alive to witness... enlightening. I think this is an epitaph of an era. I'm getting too old for this sh*t!!!

burgsurfer Tuesday, 17 Mar 2015 at 09:34 pm new

I reckon it's a sort of first step to come out of the closet. You know make a video that is like that... Next he will be have a pink board.... And so on....

scottishsponger Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 09:18 am new

What has shaving yourself go to do with being gay? And the colour pink? Is it because all gay guys like pink and shave themselves, just like women do because, hey everyone's got to fit into a box?

reecen Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 12:09 am new

Those stills are super disturbing, no way the vids will get a run.
Who is Medinas main sponsor and how the hell did they let this happen?
I think I just quit surfing.

Blowin Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 12:47 am new

I just revisited this in case it was just a Nu Gen thing that had escaped me , but....that's some inappropriate , weird shit.

I'm no prude in case you're wondering. I've been with the same chick for a glorious while but previous to that I'd let it all hang out, so to speak.

But....fuck me.

I'm not judging. If this is the direction that the Next era is heading then good luck .

Are all the young heterosexuals out there second guessing what chicks want or is this a directive issued by modern , self assured females that know exactly what they need to achieve happiness in a relationship ?

I happen to know more than a few young bucks that are, for better or worse , tattooed , pumped and manscaped within an inch of their lives and to a man I've no doubt that they are merely reproducing that which they believe is expected of them.

Maybe this is evolution that I'm witnessing. More likely it's the modern equivalent of A previous eras lead based foundation , beauty spots and bleached wigs .

Whatever. Get stuck in gents if that's what tickles your fancy.

Frankly I think it's gay as fuck. And I've got a gay relative that I love to death that shaves his legs so that's not just idle vilification.

Having said that, ladies have obviously altered their grooming habits over recent times....much to my appreciation. So maybe it's a societal improvement.

Or maybe Mr Medina was offered a wad of cash that Tony Stark could not have refused to merely shave his armpits in the name of commerce ?

Ca sera sera...

burgsurfer Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 06:25 am new

I think that the fact a "men's mag" is now a mag full of pics of dudes who are ripped, lean, have a perfect hair cut and some gel in hair + one arm covered in tats from wrist to arm pit says it all. Suppose that similar to how media, fashion, society have established in girls the need to strive to look like a female model that society is driving men/ boys to look like metro hipster wussies....

True too that times are changing.... People sit in front of TVs, on computers, in shopping malls etc and get blasted by images and adverts that change them to become like this.

On a personal note, I work in Sydney, in an office with about 60 people and most are 20 to 30yrs old. A dozen or so are gay. You can barely tell the difference between the metro straight and gay blokes. It's not the gays come across straight, it's the straight seem gay. My employer sent 12 of us to Bali.... Great trip... They did nothing but get massages and go shopping - straight blokes!!! None of them surf but still, why go all the way to Bali and get massages and facials and the like????

Particularly younger from metropolitans at definitely more feminin, not just in looks but in the way they talk, there interests everything. That said, I am on the early train now and it's full of tradies... Young blokes that look like men.

I just can't help thinking that Medina is comming out.... Nothing wrong if he is. Both my best mates at work are gay and one of my best mates out of work is too. I wouldn't respect him or his surfing any less....

To all the blokes: If Medina came out the closet would it make you respect him less?? Would you stop your son / even daughter putting a Medina poster up?

memlasurf Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 09:11 am new

Burg, was in New York over Christmas the place was chokablock with bearded hipsters coiffured to within a inch of their life (what else do you do in a big city but dress up). I wonder if the hirsute look extends to the rest of their body, if so I am the ultimate hipster (hairy bugger) and Medina is soooo yesterday.

scottishsponger Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 09:29 am new

Interesting post burgsurfer, and some good questions raised. In answer to your question, I'll turn the question around - why would it make anyone respect him less? What does his sexuality have to do with anything outside of the bedroom and anyone else, let alone surfing? It would actually make me respect him more. It's about time we had a gay surfer breaking down stereotypes. I'm sick to death of hearing men being derided as being "gay" or possessing a vagina if they do anything even remotely different to the traditional male stereotype. It's ignorant, sad and belies a deep insecurity about their own place in the world. Sexuality is a spectrum and wherever you are on it is nobody else's business. It doesn't relate to your ability to do anything. There's been a number of tough-as-nails, masculine sports stars who've come out in the past few years, rugby players, American footballers, league players....
I wouldn't stop my son putting a picture up of him whether he was gay or straight. Are there really some blokes out there who would be disappointed if their son was gay?

burgsurfer Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 10:24 am new

Of course there are loads of people who would be very disappointed, even disown their son / daughter. Two of the gays I work with parents don't know they are gay.....

Just as an aside though, the only people I hear say "that's so gay" are actually the gays I lnow.

Swellnet has run some interesting articles / forums on this topic. Enter gay into the search Engine top right corner of swellnet and you will see them.

I started surfing when I was 8 yrs old. 30 years on nearly all my friends have been surfers, asides from work. It's been my experience that most surfers / surf culture does look down on gays. Sorry to say that.

Are there things that are more synomous with being gay... Yes there are.... Does that make them bad - no.

scottishsponger Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 11:22 am new

Based on your experience and circle of friends, can you elaborate as to why they'd be disappointed? Could they even articulate or rationalise why they'd be disappointed?

I don't think it's surf culture in particular that looks down on gay people. I actually think its a problem with the Aussie, macho, boofhead culture. I've lived all over the world and never have I experienced the kind of one-eyed, homogenous, narrow-mined attitude to anything different, that exists in the wider male community in Australia. Just look at the current bigoted government that Australians voted in if you doubt this. Even NZ has legalized gay marriage. I'm not gay, but I don't need to be to see the toxic attitudes in Australia to anyone that doesn't fit the macho Aussie bloke mold. Just being vegetarian is enough.............

burgsurfer Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 11:42 am new

One said she doesn't want to give her Dad a heart attack. The other said his parents just could not understand.... I assume if you researched why people stay in the closet you would get a similar response from most people who are scared to tell parents.

I must say though thst your observation of Austrails does seem a little off to me. I see a few different attitudes. Working in Sydney in the corporate world, most are ultra liberal. But I live in a mucho almost red neck mining town down south of Sydney called Helensburgh and there attitudes are much more conservative. Perhaps you are tarring Aussie males with too broad a brush? Would not see similar attitudes in much of tough, blue collar Scotland.

Also, ALL of the surveys done is Aus have strongly supported gay marriage - ask google... So it's not the Aussie people who are against it, it is the people we voted in.....

scottishsponger Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 12:54 pm new

Good point about the surveys mate, although they're supposed to represent the people and the electorate knew who they were voting in. I agree with you about inner Sydney being much more enlightened than some of the smaller, more conservative towns. I've experienced the same thing in Aus and maybe it's not fair to tarnish all Aussie men with the same brush. I do believe though, that compared to the rest of the Western world Australia possesses an ingrained macho bloke culture which is highly prevalent outside of select parts of the big cities. Unfortunately this culture makes many men closed off to diversity and intolerant of those vastly different to themselves.

burgsurfer Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 03:40 pm new

Yeah, there is a lot of prejudice and everyone is guilty of it. But I am not trying to excuse a homo phobic culture....

I work in recruitment and constantly see racism from the corporate yups who are very liberal about gays yet really don't like anyone outside of the "European" gene pool. The gay lady who is sitting behind me hates fat people, she literally can not stand them and says they make her sick.... the 21 year old chick who does our admin hates Christians.... The gay who owns the business I work in hates boring straight people who aren't fun at parties.... I don't like my red neck neighbors who congregate in my neighbor's driveway mid morning on Saturday and Sunday and drink beer all day... and so on, so on....

yocal Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 10:41 am new

if he came out as being gay I would be MORE accepting of his choice to be a Gilette body hair removal model. Of him as a pro surfer I would be indifferent, makes no difference to me.

But in saying that I see absolutely nothing wrong with giving a straight fella shit for doing something like shaving their armpits hahahahaha

fitzroy-21 Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 11:47 am new

I'm sick of being told they are "elite athletes".

FFS, they are surfers with better than average ability.

thomas11 Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 11:52 am new

Yes and no.
Mick Fanning, is an elite athlete, Kelly is an Elite Athlete, the big wave surfers are elite athletes.
Some of the blokes on tour fit your category of regular blokes who are just very very good surfers however.
Wilko, Taj and Jordy come to mind there.

fitzroy-21 Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 12:30 pm new

Mmmmm, still not convinced, Fit as fuck with freakish surfing ability. Elite surfers perhaps. But athletes? Splitting hairs, I know, I just can't stand the tag "elite athlete" for pro surfers.

thomas11 Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 12:54 pm new

Depends on how you classify and elite athlete also.
Does it come down to their physical fitness? or more?
The fact that these guys are in the top 1% of their chosen sport probably suggests they are elite athletes.

dazzler Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 01:21 pm new

I think you're all missing the biggest single disturbing issue raised in this story. Why waste your money on Body gel or shaving cream!! Fuck me thats just crazy when you could afford a few more beers a week. if you really need a clean rash free shave , just grab the wife's conditioner.
Ive been shaving my face with it for over ten years without a scratch, and whats even better not paying $20 + a bottle for crap that doesn't work.
I buy gillette cartridges for my mac3 online and save another $10. Young fellas are way too wasteful with their money.
Who else has a few good tips to keep the beer fridge adequately stocked!!

rh-taxi Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 05:41 pm new

Home brew Hastoes, if you don't already, tastes better and you can alter it to your taste.
Shaving under your arms? I Dunno, I caught crabs once from a sleeping mat on a train in Vietnam, my girlfriend noticed them during a special moment and decided that a total groin shave was the best remedy, near completion with only a couple of tiny tufts left and there was still 2 crabs left fighting over the last bit of foliage ,using the swiss army magnifying glass to see the little bastards. Anyway growing back was unpleasant, itchy, among other things.

Hastoes Wednesday, 18 Mar 2015 at 05:45 pm new

Agree with the home brew! I used to even sell it at the odd house party after all the idiots ran out. Crabs are bad shit. id never shave underneath my arms, but if i did id use hair conditioner as the gel, I'm telling ya its the business

The Attacking of femaleness, deriding ‘girly stuff’ and rolling your eyes at ‘women’s issues’ declaring yourself heterosexual (to prove so) and how manly you are is sexism and homophobia writ large. this thread is fucking terrible.

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 02:53 pm new

Fair play, the homophobic shit was all too much, but why is laughing at this attempted encroachment into masculinity inferred as sexism? The way I see it, Gillette want young men to hate their bodies the way young women do. Hairy is ugly and there's only one way to fix it! Buy Gillette Body™.

It's a marketing scam and should be viewed as such, not tolerated because deriding it could be perceived as sexism.

Blowin Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:06 pm new

Do you think my comment was homophobic ?

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:16 pm new

Showed intellectual curiousity, an understanding of the wending paths of societal norms, but then undid your stirling scholarly work with idle vilification - albeit qualified.

Just wouldn't have been the choice of words I'd use.

Blowin Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:39 pm new

You're really not making it easy for me to get all trumped up and indignant Stu.

You do realise that to vilify is to denounce , criticise or condemn don't you ? None of which are contained in the saying " gay as fuck " a swear word doesn't imply distaste or a rejection.

I find chocolate tasty as fuck. And I love chocolate.

My relative was informing me that it's common practice for himself and his mates to shave their bodies.
To acknowledge this predilection and to present it as representative of a culture is not vilification.

Cheers for the introduction to the word wending. I had to look it up.

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:50 pm new

I've got a cousin that's gay and he's hairy as fuck. So's his partner. Not sure they'd describe it the same way.

I just don't dig the word 'gay' as a pejorative, and make no mistake that's where it started. It started as a putdown, to induce shame. Gays have themselves co-opted the word, but that's a defence mechanism to take some of the sting out of it. Same as Afro-Americans can use the word 'nigger' among themselves but just you go to downtown Atlanta and call out to a brother using that word.

Language changes, and tolerance to the word gay is changing. Fortunately there's plenty of other ways to show indignation.

Blowin Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 04:19 pm new

It's not pejorative . The term gay pride does not reference self hate. Homophobes may have temporally co opted it , but like most terms, it's the delivery that provides the nuance implying meaning. With the right amount of sneer you can say someone is " very particular " and it becomes pejorative.

Homophobes can get their stinking hands off it.

It's my beloved brother that is gay and he doesn't give a fuck about it.

I care because I'm developing a growing resentment and rejection of the fascism associated with political correctness.

Anyway....been getting any waves ?

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 04:21 pm new

But would you take your anti-PC act to downtown Atlanta? Give a call out to the brothers with their favourite N word? Done with the right delivery of course.

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 04:23 pm new

Waves? Bit of a session at the Big V the other week. Got a few under the shade of the condemned Headlands pub this week. Travesty what the developers are gonna do there.

Blowin Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 04:32 pm new

No I wouldn't use the N word under any circumstance. I'd say gay to the same brothers if they were swish fellas no problem.

What's going on at Headies ?

clif Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 04:34 pm new

Political correctness as fascism ... Now you're stretching. use whatever words you want and have whatever opinion you want but if you use them and have that opinion expect to be called out if you're being homophobic, sexist, racist, etc.

Calling someone "Political correct" is actually the fascist retort to silence dissent against normative prejudice, bigotry, etc.

Not saying 'you' are fascist, by the way.

Waves ... On their way :-)

burgsurfer Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 05:28 pm new

Must say, it seems the boys are having a chuckle and heckle...

But yeah, we did go a bit south of the border of political correctness.... I think we edge each other further.

See it all the time though and do it all the time.... bag out chicks, bag out yobs, bag out brazzos, seppos, french, bag out Christians, muslims, politicians, sales people, fat people, the Israelis... on and on and on. Yet if we call a bloke a girly-boy or say he is starting to come out after he shaves his tits and pits then all of a sudden the political correctness police come into play. Why is that?

Not saying its badthat we get a bit of a correction and I did delete one of me comments last night... Heck I have three close friends who are gay, I don't think I am homophobic or a hater... Its just a heckle.... I have friends who are chicks and I dig have a chuckle at them too and they dig to have a chuckle at me.

I mean loads of people swear in the forums... where the swearing police?

Maybe I am not thinking laterally enough but perhaps I am thinking too laterally about this.

clif Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 06:10 pm new

I was reading the thread so I commented. If I had of been on another thread and seen some of the stuff you refer to I may have commented (or not). You're a mature lateral thinking person, Burgsurfer. You can decide for yourself. If you have an opinion you state it. As do others. If it makes you feel uncomfortable when I comment and disagree so be it. Some of your comments make others and I feel lousy. You don't have a robust campfire conversation and then complain about "political correctness police" because someone disagrees with your opinions/attitudes. We're not all going to nod our head as if all is hunky dory when it ain't.

burgsurfer Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 09:11 pm new

Sorry Cliff didn't mean to make you feel lousy.... Really am very sorry!!

My joke about a pink board and coming out was a silly thoughtless joke. It was just that though, a silly joke. I think if you read my other posts that are not tongue in cheek you will get my opinion.

I think you took my reply above the wrong way, I was not complaining about the political correctness police. Read it again, I reckon they were due in this forum cause we had gone too far south in banter... And that's what it is banter. Honestly, it is not vindictive hate stuff the boys are saying but that does not excuse it.

I really am very, very sorry to cause offense though, the lesson is learnt!

Still think Gabby is an idiot for doing that advert though!!

Thanks for responding, Burgsurfer. I understand better now. Cheers.

Hey Stu, my comment wasn't directed at the post per se. I realize some people are deriding the commodification of surfing and the body. Fair cop.

However, others were deriding and and ridiculing 'femininity' and anything to do with it (if a bloke), as if to be associated with the 'feminine' makes one lesser e.g. less of a man. Femininity was being conflated with the commodification and consumption and beauty-care, etc.

A relationship is set up whereby women and femininity are being lesser valued. Masculinity comes to equate to a repudiation of femininity; being a man involves repudiation of being a woman.

Sexism insists that men must avoid association with the feminine at all costs because, if they do not, they are weak. They are pussies, bitches, women, girls, gay (see the homophobia), etc. Femininity is portrayed as 'weakness' and yet, oddly, it has the power to strip men of their manliness.

= sexism

“Masculinity is so fragile that apparently even the slightest brush with the feminine destroys it” - Gwen Sharpe

Anywayyyy, my comment was directed at some of the comments in the thread. Apologies for any misunderstandings.

Rabbits68 Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 01:16 pm new

Yeah bizzare reaction to this post. He's just a pro sportsperson endorsing a product for dollars. What's the crime. Who wouldn't do it for serious coin??

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 02:39 pm new

No crime. I do enjoy the ethical athletics though; like Sally Fitz endorsing KFC while on the campaign trail for 'Live Like Sally', her ode to good healhty living.

We know that paid endorsements are a sham so why not fucking laugh at them?

Rabbits68 Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:22 pm new

Never said I wasn't having a laugh myself, but the whole gay vibe is bizzare, but if that's some peoples takw in it so be it.

If Gillete came to Swellnet with a solid offer would you guys turn it down? Hope so, you wouldn't want to be associated with a sham deal eh?!? :-)

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:26 pm new

A solid offer for us to shave our pits?

Man, I'll do it for free if you ask nicely.

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:27 pm new

Anyhoo, Gillette have advertised with Swellnet. They just didn't ask me to shave.

Rabbits68 Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:38 pm new

There you go, no harm done, everyone's a winner. Although your still hairy I presume :-)

yocal Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 05:47 pm new

So Armpit shaves are a no brainer eh Stu? let's cut to the core of your soul then... If you were offered the most oceanfront view over Headlands or SP in one of those squeaky clean new apartments above the Tav, for half the selling price.... Would you take it?

stunet Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 06:22 pm new

Oh, I can feel the temperature getting hotter, sweat is trickling down my brow, as the flames lick and my core beliefs wither under the blast. Sadist!

Half the selling price, eh?

Nah, fuck it, I just couldn't do it. And more fool me for saying no when they're gonna be bought and sold and lived in no matter what I do or don't do. It doesn't change a thing.

But for a quarter the price me and my battered beliefs would have a new home...

yocal Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 06:54 pm new

Ha! Resisting the half price tag shows true grit!

...But to concede at all goes to support the view that dedicated surfers are all wave hungry cut-throat Narcissists when it boils down hahahaha. Even the Surf Yoga teachers I'll bet.

memlasurf Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 02:45 pm new

Reminds me of the time back in the 90's when a certain Geelong player changed his name to Whiskers for a week or two (legally) to promote cat food (this reference is probably completely lost on anyone from the two northern states). Seemed like a good idea at the time (anything for a dollar) ??!!??. I wonder if he does it as part of his grooming ritual and if so why would he bother as he isn't that hairy anyhow. Seems like a lot of work for nothing, it is bad enough shaving your mug although the hipsters have potentially saved us from that one. Wait till he gets to my age, if he keeps it up he will be shaving his back, crack, ears and nose! Too much information there.

Bob's 2 Bob's Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 02:17 pm new

Agree Rabbit - Who would have thought you'd stir up reactions like this? Not Stunet hey???

the modern Turtle Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 02:17 pm new

I noticed the Gillette sticker on his boards at the quik pro. A strong company with a decent reputation- why wouldn't he do it ?

Bob's 2 Bob's Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 02:30 pm new

Yeah but nobody's watching in Brasil so why would a company like Gillette sponsor him?

udo Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 02:44 pm new

You think the boys @ 2035 are gonna follow the world champ........or do they already shave there pits?

Luke G Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 02:44 pm new

See more and more of those metro sexual hipster grooming salons opening up now, not real keen on paying a blonde bimbo to take a cut throat to my neck or the genital region if they even do that thing? Thats just me... not cool enough with my hairy chest and legs!!

GONAD_MAN Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:25 pm new

That pissy little razor blade wouldnt cut shit on my body. Bring out the wipper snipper. :]

Blowin Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 03:48 pm new

What's with the new age barber shops popping up in tandem with surf shops ?

Always with a ye olde barbers chair and a barber that looks like he has just been transported from the frontier days of the American Wild West complete with large beard and brill creamed hair .

I've seen three in Bali in the last day.

The synergy between leg ropes and getting your mullet trimmed is lost on me.

Craig Thursday, 19 Mar 2015 at 05:12 pm new

Haha

the modern Turtle Friday, 20 Mar 2015 at 08:58 am new
