Shawn 'Barney' Barron tribute - video

The surf world lost one of its most colourful characters last week. Shawn 'Barney' Barron had an unexpected heart attack at his Santa Cruz home and was found by friends.

Before Ozzie Wright became the abstract art guy for Volcom, Barney was the fella that filled that role. He starred in all their early films, and Volcom has now compiled his moments as tribute to Barney.

Meth related spirit?

That caused it? Nah, just a bog standard coronary. Nothing sinister.

Is it just me or did this guy attempt a standup barrel roll at 1.25. Full respect even if he didn't do it on purpose but I'm pretty sure he tried to do that. Unique style looked like a Hellman nice work barney RIP.

Shawn “Barney” Barron, the 44-year-old Santa Cruz surfer hailed for his innovative surfing and frequent volunteer work, died from a rupture in his heart facilitated by methamphetamine use, according to the Santa Cruz County coroner.

“A cause of that was acute and chronic methamphetamine use,” said Baldridge.

Disease?... Or personality disorder.

You decide.

Santa Cruz has been a mess for a longtime now, I spent a bit of time there in 99 and early 00,s and it was rife even then, lots bad attitudes and hassles. Take a look at "Learning to Breathe" the Anthony Ruffo story for a insight, a lot of the pro surfer scene there guys were heavy, charging giant mavericks totally off chops and now the consequences are evident, very sad to see one of the nicer guys out of there going out so early. RIP Barney

Wonder if the " Volcom Family" new he had issues with meth, if so was it a case of turning a blind eye.......

If surfing as well & as ballsy as this guy did & it still doesn't give you enough of a buzz, you've gotta wonder.......

RIP young man...

Bout time someone wrote a book on it, without glorifying them as harmless scallywags.
