Mick Fanning donates $75,000 to shark attack victim

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

mattlee.jpgMick Fanning has put a philanthopic twist on the dubious province of chequebook journalism donating his appearance fee to a recent shark attack victim. Following his appearance on '60 Minutes' last night, Fanning dropped his $75,000 fee into the account of Matt Lee, the bodyboarder attacked by a shark at North Wall Ballina last month.

'60 Minutes' producers originally intended to have Fanning pay Lee a visit on the show, however further complications to Lee's injuries meant he had to go back into surgery when the segment was being filmed.

Channel 9 CEO David Gyngell, who also surfs, rounded the number up, donating another $25,000 on top of Mick's $75,000.

Awesome!

Good on you Mick, and good on Dave Gyngell.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery from Matt.

longboarder420 Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 11:16 am new

Whilst I think this is good, The bloke who got attcked has a better chance of surviving the attack then some childern do just living there lives, Would of liked to see this money to go into Third world countries where if you get attacked your gone for sure, Matt lee have a good night on the pokies lad,

stunet Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 11:20 am new

You really are a fuckwit, eh mate? Yeah you're enitled to your opinion about where the money should go - though of course it's Mick's money and he can do what he likes - but that last line is pure arsewipe spite.

Bloke's still going through surgery a month after the attack, where the fuck do you think the money is gonna go?

Blowin Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 11:57 am new

Second that.

longboarder420 Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 12:16 pm new

LOL , typical westerners, yet he still would of got top medical care with out the 75 grand, well 100 ...... think of the kids in africa who CAN die because of a cut there feet, Dont tell me it deosent happen because it does, 100 grand could of done wonders in a third world country, MICK FANNING isent a top bloke for giving a 100 grand to some guy whos family probly gave him everythink when he grew up when theres kids in the world with out food , PEACE OUT ,

50young Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 12:22 pm new

Like Stu said your a real Fuckwit mate,

longboarder420 Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 01:26 pm new

Instead of jumping on the abuse ban wagon , open youe mind a little

If any one of use got attacked we would get top medical care regardless of our income or social status just to keep us alive ,

you shouldent need100 grand, Unless you take our medical system forgranted and want to head over to the US or something to learn to walk again , I would just be grateful to get some stiches,

Then the problem isent with mick Giving this fella 100 Grand its the fact channel nine would give it to mick !!

Open your mind and have a look at the fucked up world we live in ....

How many times have channel 9 rebuilt some ones house because it has burnt down or some crap is just stuipidity, go and build a house for some one who really needs it ,

It really amaze me how selfish people in this world are , Owning 2 houses whilst people dont even have 1, show some compassion god dam

im really glad i only work 5 hours a day for the money i need for food to survive, MONEY is the root of all evil , PEACE love youse all MWaaah mwwah

stunet Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 01:42 pm new

What in the name of Jah are you talking about??

Houses burning down, people buying houses, some people don't even have one house, all in the most atrocious spelling and grammar one could lay eyes on, while replying to a comment about sharks. Comprehension, wot?

Never mind the medical system, Longboarder, it's education you shouldn't take for granted.

50young Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 01:51 pm new

Instead of working 5 hours a day why don't you work 8 hrs and give the rest to a third world country??

longboarder420 Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 02:03 pm new

STU .... I like you,
And 50YOUNG not a bad idea, Ill ask the boss About that , :D

zenagain Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 12:23 pm new

How do you know he hasn't donated $100k to a third world country?

And with your cheque for $100k, you'd be straight down to World Vision in the morning?

C'mon man, appreciate the gesture for what it is. It's a good thing they did.

longboarder420 Tuesday, 4 Aug 2015 at 12:28 pm new

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA , got youse going good ,

jaunkemps Wednesday, 5 Aug 2015 at 04:25 pm new

You do any volunteer work at all, if so where so I can go look you up and ask just how much time you give to others, money pretty much means nothing when you cannot walk or work for that matter does it, maybe your opinion is a little out of sync with others thoughts dont you think !!!!!!!!
Oh excuse me, have a nice day egg roll ; }
Did l get you going huh did I........

longboarder420 Thursday, 6 Aug 2015 at 11:48 am new

Yes I do Volunteer, I spend time with the homeless people and drug effected people of newcastle, I often buy food for them and let them sleep and shower at my house, Find me at The Joy of Cummings centre in newcastle ....

Anto Thursday, 6 Aug 2015 at 12:24 pm new

Not sure why I'm getting involved in this one but it so hard to understand why you question Micks donation LB420.
Based on you initial comment then why on earth are you helping homeless and drug addicts in Australia??? Shouldn't you be doing that in poorer countries??? See! you make no sense
In the end you should keep doing whatever you are doing and let everyone else do whatever they want mate

longboarder420 Thursday, 6 Aug 2015 at 01:02 pm new

Yeah and what I do is to try and stir shit on swellnut.cum by adding an outside perspective

I help the homless because i cant get to another country on the weekends.

but i have talked to the boss and we are organising me to work extra hours and have it donated to those overseas, Its acutally going to go into helping females with sanatary pads in africa,

freeride76 Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 11:24 am new

theween Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 11:29 am new

Unreal! Goodonya Mick, hope you get to visit Matt too.

tonybarber Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 11:38 am new

Great stuff - both Mick and Channel 9

Craig Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 11:39 am new

Chris Blowes is also still struggling after his attack around Port Lincoln. Guess you can't help them all, but a little bit of that his way wouldn't hurt.

pointy Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 12:12 pm new

nice gesture but can anyone explain why Matt Lee was singled out to get the money over, or along with, others?

NB I'm not saying Matt doesn't need or deserve it but am simply curious about how the decision was made to give it to him

50young Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 12:21 pm new

He is friend of friends of Micks, according to Mick and Ballina was a beach Mick surfed as a grom

pointy Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 12:38 pm new

thanks 50young

makes sense.

yocal Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 04:22 pm new

Plus its a gift, not a Bronwyn Bishop, so he is entitled to do as he pleases with his money

pointy Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 05:23 pm new

"he is entitled to do as he pleases with his money"

and he chose wisely unlike Bronny

simba Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 12:40 pm new

Yep you gotta take your hat off to Mick and David for that matter, well done and Mick is certainly worthy of the title champion in and out of the water.

goofyfoot Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 01:50 pm new

What a fucken champion.

spencie Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 02:35 pm new

Not only very generous but positive publicity for surfing in general.

thermalben Monday, 3 Aug 2015 at 04:20 pm new

Onya Mick.

Also, seems Mick's story pulled in a pretty big audience, all the more impressive given the delayed timeslot too.

"Mick Fanning’s story about his brush with a Great White Shark lifted Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes last night which along with The Voice gave the channel a commanding win on Sunday night. The return of the champion surfer to the water drew 1.08m viewers despite its post 9pm showing according to OzTam’s overnight metro ratings."
