'Snowsurf' Australian screening times
Join award winning Australian photographer Shane Peel as he journeys to the mountains, beaches, and silver birch forests of Japan's northern most island, Hokkaido, to follow a unique pod of breakaway snowboarders and surfers who are forging a whole new genre of snowboarding in one of the worlds' last great remaining powder snow zones.
'Snowsurf 'is making its Australian premiere next week. The times are as follows:

I notice that family Gentem have something to do with the vid. In my opinion they make some of the most beautiful snowboards in the world. Gentemstick Magic38 is on my wish list. Just have to convince my wifey to drop 2k on a snowboard.

When you watch this you can see just how addictive snowboarding can be. It is a close second after surfing for me.

Feck great trailer Zen. That certainly has got me thinking twice. But it doesn't look like we'll get over there in 2016 unfortunately. We were talking about a 2016 white Xmas over there but that does look like happening now unfortunately.

I KNOW SOMETHING, and that is, it's all about the weight on weight off feeling doing turns in powder, that is the closest to surfing down the line IMO.
Powder is an addictive magic carpet ride. So good.

I'd say the most snowfall would be Niigata around the Yuzawa area (on average 10-12 metres a season) but there's a place in Aomori prefecture called Hakkoda that consistently gets 14 metres + a season.
But you can't beat Hokkaido, dumps down and the lightest, fluffiest talcum powder snow anywhere.
But, I do know a place well off the gaijin radar on the border of Fukushima and Yamagata. Local mountain, high elevation and only 3 pair lifts to the top once you leave the ropeway. None of that fancy Gondola or covered quads stuff. Best quality snow on Honshu. Angel dust:)
Don't really know anything of those guys but the boards they're riding are from a little company called Gentemstick and when you see one they really are a thing of beauty. I really really want one for those deep powder days (of which we get many- ha ha)

Zen why does Yuzawa get so much snow given it's just up the road from hakuba?
I don't know Don. These are just my observations but Niigata year year after just seems to get so much snow. But really Hakuba (Nagano) which is really just down the road isn't too shabby either and my go to area (Fukushima/Yamagata) we get our fair share too.
I don't know if you remember but last season some resorts in Niigata were under-calling their snowfall because there was just so much it was keeping people away.
Seriously, what ski-resort would downplay the amount of snow they get? Gotta love Japan.
