Wow! That's easily the best big wave footage i've seen since that cloudbreak swell a few years back. So big and clean! Not just a drop either but a good ride. Epic!

How do you reckon that compares to that cloudbreak swell in terms of size? Bigger hey?

Jaws heaps bigger . By about 15ft more

Going left @ 5:20, wow!

Who got that left? Seriously one of the best waves I have seen.

May have been Pedro Caladoo ?

The right at about 4:30 was pretty crazy. Dorian I think.

And the drop at about 3:30 had to be one of the bigger ones on an already macking day.

Great footage and good soundtrack.

Surfer Magazine has a great series of stills from the session.

From there, this photo of Pedro Calado going left really shows the size of the waves they were paddling into. Photo: Pompermayer

Absolutely mind blowing that this is paddle!!

Does anyone agree that this left looks bigger, or at least a notch meaner and top-to-bottom, than the right that Aaron Gold rode? It looks like a 4 ft beach break the way it's sucking up. Not taking anything away from the the other wave but the right is getting all the credit.

A natural footers conspiracy?

i think the reef actually concentrates the swell onto the right , which makes it bowl/ refract in .
The left seems to fade out .
Maybe with a slightly different swell direction this may not be the case , but its nowhere near as consistant .
and that does look like its going to throw wide , but i presume the swell line actually refracts out to sea , making an exit probably pretty tight .

I agree with you. I saw that wave before I saw any comments. Measured against the board length it looks bigger to me. The commitment to make that wall without losing it would make it the wave of the session.

I'm with you on that noreaster. The right at least deposits you in the channel. I think I heard some commentary on the other footage that the left deposits you much more in the line of the macking swells, seems to look that way to me, and it doesn't die out on the left (if that is the right expression for that sort of wave!) in the way it does on the right, even seems to bend around and possibly close out. Looks like a genuine nightmare either way to me.

Where is the other 2mins?

lostdoggy Sunday, 17 Jan 2016 at 11:55 am new

Watch it at 80% speed.

Stj Sunday, 17 Jan 2016 at 11:07 am new

Well that made my dawn surf this morn look rather tame! That was insane!!!!!

Rabbits68 Sunday, 17 Jan 2016 at 12:50 pm new

Incredible stuff. Courageous effort by all.

Even though the conditions looked very good, when you see the boards fly away at the top of those lips, it just reinforces how much the slightest wind plays havoc in those huge waves. Those guys make it look deceptively makeable, particularly when viewing from the computer screen :)

I wonder if Niccolo Porcella was out there?!? If so, surely something crazy will appear on the net soon enough..........

batfink Tuesday, 19 Jan 2016 at 09:49 pm new

Re the wind rabbits, there may be no actual wind to speak of, but damn near gale force at the top of the lip through the air compression from the wave.

I know all about that, I was experiencing it on a 2' day at the beach just recently. :-)

... and not a drop in to be seen

Those Aaron Gold stills are totally insane. And the front on shot of Dorian pulling in as well; unbelievably casual.

From Shane Dorian's instagram, a Brian Bielmann photo of one of Aaron Gold's waves. That's a pretty solid paddle-in wave.
