This is almost a wipeout segment . Definitely isn't showing the best rides , on instagram theres a lot of the better rides featured . I noticed that some of the usual suspects weren't at jaws yesterday , meaning that it wasn't the best or only option for xxl waves . Some of oahus outer reefs were surfed . My guess is that huge period factor

simba Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 02:48 pm new

Hey Camel,do many of these guys get hit by there boards?

caml Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 05:10 pm new

Yes I assume so its a dangerous game

Craig Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 03:50 pm new

Why in every video I've seen this season does it seem like the SUP's have that much more drive/spring off the bottom turn, projection and then maneuverability? They out surf all those guys on the open face.

benski Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 04:01 pm new

I've noticed that too Craig. I don't know anything about board design but I was watching some of the early season stuff wondering what shapers could do to give the surfer more control in the turn, basically to allow sharper bottom turns etc. Then I saw a SUP whipping under the lip and maneuvering like he was on a short board. spun me out. I guess there's something to learn there but I've got no idea what it is!!

Craig Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 04:10 pm new

Yeah would love to know what part of the design is making them surf so well!

stunet Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 04:12 pm new

'Cos they're shorter and wider? They're too wide for a normal paddler but the volume packed into the width means the length, and hence rail line, can be reduced.

Maybe deep 'V' under the front foot, too?

caml Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 05:08 pm new

Because its kai lenny the sup world champion ! Yes he is incredible . But are his barrells as deep ? No . His boards are lighter , thicker , shorter , than the paddle guns , has leverage of paddle ? Maybe

caml Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 05:14 pm new

Every single sup clip ive seen is kai lenny this season not a single other , & I have been searching everything he is amazing hey , windsurfing as well

Can ... not ... fathom ...

How can so many people be so so gutsy? Don't they get scared? I'd be crying in the car park.

He rips, pure and simple. He's in a league of his own on a sup. And believe it or not, some of us muppets on sups can actually surf. And take our turn.

benski Friday, 29 Jan 2016 at 10:06 pm new

Interesting, cheers fellas.

Be kind of funny if SUPs become the board of choice for high performance big wave paddle surfing.

caml and stu are on the money.

Look at what the tow guys do when they don't have to worry about propulsion to actually get into these beasts.

Paddles, when used correctly, give a tripod of stability - so Kai can lay his board over further onto its rail to produce the tighter turns

caml Saturday, 30 Jan 2016 at 11:10 am new

Yeah ok the paddle gives him extra leverage what a surfer he is !
