3,000 kms across Italy - video

Swellnet Dispatch

Another surf clip from Italy! Robert D'amico spills the beans - single roasted Arabica, naturally - on the surf potential in his homeland. In this clip Robert and Leo Fioravanti surf two swells at two locations, each at either end of the country.

Had an interesting surf in Italy once.

I was south of Livorno and went for a wave - nothing great, just 1-2 foot gutless windswell. In fact, it was so ordinary I don't recall that there were any locals out.

Anyway, I'm sitting there and I notice this little sailing boat in the distance, it's maybe 25ft, fibreglass with an enclosed cabin. It's got no sails up, it's just drifting.

So I'm watching this thing over about 30-45 minutes and it's getting closer, slowly getting blown closer to shore. And it's really rocky coast there, totally unforgiving.

And I'm thinking, shit, this boats either broken its mooring or dragged its anchor or something. Or maybe, the owner's fallen overboard. Or had a heart attack. Or something.

The boat gets about 100m offshore from me so I figure I have to do something, whether it's climb on board and drop the anchor or try to start the motor.
I paddle out to it, not knowing what I might find onboard.

As I paddle up to it I start calling out, Hey hey, hello.
Next thing the companionway hatch slides open and I guy sticks his head out. He sees where he is and his eyes suddenly get real big.
Next thing, there's a flurry of activity, with two naked guys up on deck, hoisting sails and getting their shit together.

I paddle away.

I guess sometimes when the boat's a rockin you still have to come a knockin.

did you take note of which guy was squinting? (he was the one looking for the golden rivet)

AndyM Monday, 2 May 2016 at 07:00 pm new

I'm pretty sure they were both squinting when they came up into the harsh light of day!
