Ryan Burch on his Parallelogram Asymm - video

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Keen readers will know there's been a lot of asymmetric love on Swellnet recently (hadn't noticed? then this is for you), so it was a delight to stumble across this new Ryan Burch clip. Burch is riding one of his Parallelogram asymms, and, truth be told, it's not the best surfing of his we've seen - few dud turns, board looks a bit skitchy. But still, fella has one of the best styles going and is pushing the design envelope rather than hauling the nostalgia bandwagon.

And for a bit more Burch worship, my fave edit of his, "The Rush of the Continuous Rhythm"

Sick looking board. Anyone know if it'll fit a Samsung Galaxy?

Board looks fast off the bottom.
I love how he throws some long board moves in (did i see a cross step) then throws an air - just to confuse us all :))

Fun looking session.

Australia ?

Nah, San Diego I'd say. Not hollow enough for Big Rock but somewhere thereabouts.

right on OHV. ,thinking the same thing myself.with that style ,luv to see what he'd do on a longboard, and where he could take them shaping wise

bum_acid Thursday, 12 May 2016 at 12:33 pm new

He made his name on a longboard. Excellent smooth log riding and can shape a magic longboard.

OHV500 Thursday, 12 May 2016 at 05:25 pm new

His instagram is - bobbersandsinkers - all types of boards

old-dog Thursday, 12 May 2016 at 06:01 pm new

Sorry to spoil the love fest but to me it looks wrong, I get how an asymmetrical tail could be beneficial but the nose is out of the water the whole time and just looks like a busted board. Give me clean symmetry any day, the guy does rip though. cheers.

OHV500 Friday, 13 May 2016 at 12:12 pm new

I'm with you old-dog - I just think asymmetrics look totally wrong :)) To me you never see this in nature, fish, dolphin, shark - so why on a board. Love his style.

stunet Friday, 13 May 2016 at 01:21 pm new

You baiting me OHV?? Ha ha...

If we stood symmetrically across the board the argument would make sense, but we don't so it doesn't.

OHV500 Friday, 13 May 2016 at 01:51 pm new

HaHa - well said :)))
I just don't like the look of them :)

stunet Friday, 13 May 2016 at 01:54 pm new

They're definetely an acquired taste.

OHV500 Friday, 13 May 2016 at 01:59 pm new

I've surfed a few MC asymmetrics and just couldn't get used to the feel, understand the theory but ...

Ryan Burch's surfs with a great combo of style, speed, flow, precision and creativity vastly different to the robotic styles of most pro's . I remember surfing with Newy's Col Smith in the late 80's Smithy was on a big red asymmetric channel bottom single fin. Styling drawn out bottom-turns and fast off the tops at solid 8-10ft Margies awesome to watch. Asymmetric boards look like a lot of fun be good to have one in my quiver.

That board will make a funky coffee table.

Ryan explains what his dangerous fork nosed shapes are about on his instagram

stunet Friday, 29 Jul 2016 at 03:05 pm new

"The swallow nose keeps the rail line of the board straighter to give you more drive and rail engagement on turns and it has a concave that lets the nose act like a catamaran while paddling in and the concave also keeps the nose from dragging or pearling and even helps balance the board on air drops of foam ball rides."
