Slabbing Rio - video

"Those islands you see offshore from the Oi Rio contest site, they've gotta have waves, right?"

I'm sure plenty of crew think the same thing while watching 100 metre closeouts at Postinho. Unfortunately, the answer is não, the granite islands taper steeply into the ocean largely preventing reef setups and it's the same for many headlands in the area.

There are a few exceptions, and one of them is Shock at Itacoatiara yet it's far from a perfect reefbreak. It's enough, however, to surprise those who think Rio is all trifling beachbreaks.
