That day in June // Shipsterns - video

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

It was a day when the waves were too big, or had too much period, or the swell was too south...whatever the reason Shippies mutated more than normal and it ended up a massacre on the reef.

Watch as Mike Brennan, Danny Griffiths, Russ Bierke, and James McKean get whipped into oblivion.

Son...some waves just aren't meant to be surfed.

Who's the backhander? Total glutton for punishment.

Danny Griffiths. Fella reckons 1 outta 10 is good odds.

Ha, ha that is just what I was about to say. He just went back for more and the wipe outs were horrendous.

I remember 1 day at Broken Head. Makes me smile when ever I allow myself to go back to that day. Sitting way inside, heaving so hard, you'd hardly get your front foot on the board before getting ejected, Everyone down from me laughing when I came up spitting sand. Rip running so hard, I'd get washed way down past the crew. Paddle hard all the way around back to the spot. I made 1 out of twenty. But that number twenty was sweet. Difference is, that was 3-4 feet... The size of the double up at the bottom of these faces.. Damn... Hard to imagine being in the impact zone... Hats off boys.

Shippies 100, surfer nil!

Orange board guy has go in him. I could take one of those wipeouts, and if I survived it I would be in traction for 6 months. He just kept going back.

The one Russ pulls out of makes me feel sick from 12000 miles away never mind a few feet.
