Welcome to the void - video
Earlier this year I went on a trip with Red Bull to direct and film an episode of their Chasing the Shot series. This short film is more or less a directors cut of some of my favorite images and moments from that trip featuring Cam Richards and Noah Wegrich.
While the primary focus of the trip was surfing, it was hard not to get wrapped up in the beautiful scenery, landscapes and eventually the sense of time standing still. I wanted to make something to reflect that and not have such an emphasis purely on surf action and the fast pace we are constantly surrounded by. How'd the view be from the houses on the point and cliff?
So. Good.
Nicely free from a lot of the visual cliches as well. Long shots, full rides, sweet little surprises. I like the establishing shot of the lineup at 2:28 and then, hey, it's a surfer on a wave doing a perfect frontside reverse. Let's not freak out and whip the pan around, just keep it nice and slow and wait for him to come to us.
Maybe when you've been on some idyllic hippie farm blissing out on nature and serenity for a few days that sort of shit just happens.
