Great white shark cage breach accident - video

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Sharks, eh? If they simply conducted themselves in a more congenial fashion we could admire them for what they are without the bother of primeval fear.

About 18 months back, around about the time West Oz surfers were rationalising their need to surf, the South Oz government announced a proposal to extend commercial cage dive licenses. Cage diving had been allowed on the outlying Neptune Islands for many years, however last February a pod of Orcas ambushed a Great White causing other Whites to follow their own primeval fear and swiftly flee the area. The result was devestating to the local cage diving operations who rely on Great Whites for a thrill.

The government proposal suggested alternative cage diving sites much closer to land, some within sight of surfspots, particularly around Port Lincoln. The outcry from local surfers was no surprise, cage divers attract sharks and, as the theory goes, the sharks learn to associate humans with food. Not a pleasant thought as you jump off the rock shelf into the Southern Ocean.

Recent footage that surfaced in Mexico shows it's not just surfers who need be worried, those aluminium cages may not be all they're cracked up to be.

Lol - "Is anybody in there?" - and they're running the show!!! As Steely Dan would say "Do it again" - bet they didn't.

50young Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 10:36 am new

bet the diver needs to change his undies!

Noel Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 12:15 pm new

aussieguy Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 11:19 am new

Yeh, classic!

aussieguy Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 11:18 am new

Most entries in the Darwin Awards begin with "There is no way..." . Seriously, stop messing with nature and stop teaching sharks to associate humans with food.

zenagain Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 11:40 am new

This is ludicrous.

As an aside, is there anything in the ocean cooler than an Orca? Like a giant, tuxedo wearing doorman- you just don't mess with them.

tonybarber Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 12:29 pm new

Classic - give that man a drink.

goofyfoot Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 12:45 pm new

Fucken morons.
See the blood coming out of the shark, no animal deserves to be terrified and injured like that for human enjoyment. Even if it is a gws.

Fleazool Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 01:20 pm new

Unfortunately (or not?) it may take one of these knuckle heads being eaten before this whole ridiculous business is banned.

udo Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 01:29 pm new

Scary time..not a lot of spare room in the cage with 2 men and that beast....wishing to see the underwater footage

simba Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 04:19 pm new

chickenlips Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 02:54 pm new

Spewing just got a new board with Fluro Yellow on it! Yummy Yellow they say! Fark!

wally Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 02:54 pm new

"Is anybody in there?"
"Not anymore."

prawnhead Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 03:58 pm new

This is a prime example of why this shit needs to be stopped! ......On a number of levels.......Who in their right mind thinks that chumming white sharks for affluent tourists is a good idea ! By all means jump in and swim with a white shark if you have the intestinal fortitude to do it without a cage in the natural habitat, but the end result of this form of tourism is only going to end in "tears"......... not the eye ones !

simba Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 04:10 pm new

fukkin hilarious and someone says 'is there anyone in the cage'...like there was but.. not now....or the old chestnut 'how do you feel' when the guy emerges......beautiful stuff...shame Rodney fox wasn't in there.

freddieffer Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 04:54 pm new

Best laugh I've had in ages............ as he got out of the cage, did you see the hole in his wetsuit around his arse caused by his butt-hole explosion!

and did I hear someone on board say they didn't have a butt-plug big enough for the poor bastard's butt to stop puckering....

black-duck Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 04:29 pm new

Luck, or maybe smarts on the sharks part to realise an escape route over the top of the cage.

ojackojacko Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 06:21 pm new

thanks haydos. sounds like shark cage breaches (thanks stu) might not be so rare. love the hypocrisy of the author - she's against feeding sharks except when she does it. the clowns profiting from associating humans with food have a lot to answer for

tootr Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 06:44 pm new

This crap annoys me greatly.
Absolute idiot

Rabbits68 Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 05:34 pm new

Wonder if that clip will make the promo for next season's tours?

In all seriousness, humans tormenting a wild creature & legally making money out of it. Fucken disgraceful.

rooftop Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 05:34 pm new

"Nah, there's nobody in there. Nobody in there."

And then they pull someone out.

Then just after this catastrophic safety failure they're clapping and laughing, like, oh well, shit happens. Nothing to do with me.

Then about a million years later it occurs to someone to wander over to the other cage to get the other guy out.

Who trusts their lives to these cowboys?

chickenlips Friday, 14 Oct 2016 at 07:21 pm new

Yeah but anyway! What about my Fluro Yellow board! I've heard there colour blind but? They chew into Yellow balloons like Candy! Mick had Fluro on his board when he got stalked! Wharfjunkie Saturday, 15 Oct 2016 at 07:46 pm new

Is there one of these in Ballina?

theween Saturday, 15 Oct 2016 at 10:04 pm new

I'd be thanking the man upstairs for this miraculous escape. That he got out of that situation surely is an uplifting experience yet reading some of the comments here there seems almost an air of disappointment...yet again we get this 'poor shark' bullshit.

goofyfoot Sunday, 16 Oct 2016 at 11:52 am new

Poor shark bullshit?!

Ha so the shark deserved it did it!

Righto hero

Hako o hakonde… Sunday, 16 Oct 2016 at 05:48 pm new

Yes poor shark, the shark did not create the situation fuckwit. :-)

shortenm Sunday, 16 Oct 2016 at 12:33 pm new

Why this is tolerated and supported by any government when there are many documented and obvious cases of human feeding wild animals changing their behavior is just bizarre. DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS. Seen this sign heaps in SA National Parks.

Teasing and tormenting anything, and not feeding it especially an apex pedator at an instinctive level just seems way worse.. I've never seen a DO NOT TEASE THE ANIMALS sign cos its parents (and the teased animal) self regulating the kiddies on this 101...

chickenlips Sunday, 16 Oct 2016 at 03:51 pm new

Naah can't do it! Its beautiful I'm not changing! Come get me you Finned Funkers! I'll be waiting! Just Go! Eddie Would!

theween Sunday, 16 Oct 2016 at 06:24 pm new

Hako and goofy, sorry to say you are pathetic losers - you cry over a bit of blood on a GWS so obviously you've never harmed a living thing in your lives? Get over it and celebrate the guy's Great Escape, not turn it into another shark-hugging exercise.

Wharfjunkie Sunday, 16 Oct 2016 at 08:31 pm new

So the shark wasn't lured looking for food purely for peoples enjoyment? Poor thing gets trapped in a cage bloody disgraceful really. The only great escape was by the shark the person didn't really do anything that great.

Hako o hakonde… Sunday, 16 Oct 2016 at 09:38 pm new

if an unarmed man pokes a bear with a pointy stick we know he's an idiot, if he jumps into the bears pen and lets his mate prod the bear from outside then he's a bigger idiot.
Personally I would have been quite happy to have seen the guy get chomped, cause guys like him are making it more likely that I might get chomped .

harrydickulous Monday, 17 Oct 2016 at 02:07 pm new

Gee yud think the guy in the cage could have at least shot some footage. Must have tensed up a little.
