Around The Corner // Rip Curl: The Search - video

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

It's the old 'check around the next headland' dictum writ large. After a quick change of plans, the Rip Curl team - Dylan Perillo, Jacob Wilcox, and ring-in Ry Craike - head nearly 1,500 kilometres by sea to a different spot. It takes four days sail and there's a lot riding on the gamble.

So does the wager payoff...?

See below for video evidence and click here to read the tale.

What is the boat driver saying ?

Also water temps must be random - chicks in bikinis and guys in full steamers, one even wearing booties ?

Motoring 800 miles North - thats a serious distance or are they just making this shit up ?

"We found the wave and we got something cool, and we surfed somewhere that no one has ever surfed before, or at least not documented before. The Search paid off"

Really? I've never been to WA and I know people have surfed that wave. And documenting it is nothing to be proud of.
Maybe I shouldn't complain though. It's better they put up semi secret spots than actual secret spots.

Wave has been featured in surfing mags and had several visits by pros over 10 years ago. Ferals surfing it way before that. Surf charter was taking randoms 15 years ago and all the breaks had names then. Why lie that they are the first ?? Don't get it!

Another Search and "Destroy" mission from Rip Curl. Remember Salinas Cruz.....Surfers everywhere should boycott Rip Curl for their blatant surf spot exploitation--for their own personal gain (money).....

So I reckon this is starting to get a bit concerning. If you've been lucky enough to surf in this area, you'll know just how special it is. Whilst I don't have a problem with other surfers going out and exploring these waves, I do have a problem with them being exploited by a surf company who have no real interest in the area.

I'm curious about the motivations of Ry Craike. He's got pretty savvy with a drone and Instagram over the past year in the face of a declining pro career, and combine this with a sponsorship with the Mad Hueys and I wonder if we're gonna see a whole lot more exploitation of this area. It's great for him in the short term, but in ten years time when the number of surfers in his backyard has tripled, he'll be the first one telling them to f@ck off. The shortsightedness of people never ceases to amaze me.

Maybe do some research about ry craike before you try criticize him . I cannot see a problem with the clip of waves off an islands that are covered in oil / gas industry . So you think its better to just keep it hidden & remain an industry for the government to have possesion of the island & surfers arent allowed to stay there , ?
Or film it so others can realize the situation ? Ry is a champion & is highly respected by many

Surfers have been staying there for fifty years.

aye....brohoes

If that's phonetics Barley, then you're thinking of the wrong spot.

The spot you've named is about to be opened up to tourism completely.

Chinese tourists are especially being targeted as visitors.

They better have ample freezer space on the ferry out there to start stack the bodies in once they commence drowning en mass in pursuit of crays.

Yeah better get the right place guys . This aint no western cray nest . They may have surfed a new break you just wouldn't know would ya

Thats the problem with social media yeah? Not so much pushing shit uphill these days!

caml Monday, 28 Nov 2016 at 06:23 pm new

Refreshing at least ,. ripcurls ok . better than the same old same old same old exposure of the already famed & crowded breaks like in sa or the internet promos . craike has contributed in an extremely positive way in his home town . The crowds in wa cant keep up with craikey anyway . the state of wa population increased regardless of the exposure of the waves that weren't waves until craike made them an actual wave. Not sure why they are wearing wetsuits its a long way north perhaps bluebottles

Blowin Monday, 28 Nov 2016 at 07:16 pm new

Not that far North that it doesn't get cold still.

Fucking hot here today though.
