John John Florence // Twelve: Part 7 - video

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Here it is, the final episode of John John's web series 'Twelve'. Saving the best till last is such a rotten cliche, but what else can you say? This is his best surfing yet.

The cliche also applies to this single episode: it opens with sailing, interesting to some perhaps, shows his world title win that we've already seen, before all hell breaks loose around the seven minute mark.

There's something for everyone here, the kids are gonna rejoice at John's bolshy air game while even the most cynical old walrus will appreciate the brute force and reckless speed of those top turns-into-roundhouse cutties.

Those lines at Sunset are phenomenal.

amazing..he is the best kind of freak.

Beagle Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 01:15 pm new

Even the mere thought that he can (and wants) to get better is like a cannonshot over the bow for the rest of the WSL top 34. Unfortunately, you'd have to think he's a high risk of injury doing those types of turns on the miracle mile. Let's hope he stays healthy!

As he keeps improving at heat strategy, yeesh

Shame the WSL criteria and judging means he'll be surfing heats at 80% or whatever

Can't wait to watch this once I get home from work. Haven't watched felipes one yet so it will be interesting to see the comparison between the two.

crg Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 01:24 pm new

Hahaha! Sorry Felipe...there is no comparison.

goofyfoot Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 01:30 pm new

Haha

AndyM Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 01:34 pm new

Agreed crg, different realm with regard to flow, power, style and the lines he draws.

crg Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 01:23 pm new

When the intro says it's his best surfing yet you think to yourself what could he possibly do now? And there it was...sublime rail work in seriously critical and powerful positions...so good.
Back to back titles for sure...

stunet Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 01:31 pm new

Ha ha...I read that back to myself and thought I was being a little excitable. I'd just had a strong coffee. Was it really that good?

Watched it three times now and I stand by the words. Best surfing of his I've seen.

The torque through those Sunset carves and exiting acceleration must be just pure bliss. Phhwwoooaaarr!

blindo Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 02:33 pm new

holy filth. that was all a little too much

zenagain Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 05:06 pm new

I read the comments before watching the vid and have to agree with evrybody. JJ is just next level, kinda one of those once in a generation surfers.

That Sunset surfing is sublime. I haven't been that blown away by Sunset surfing since the Gary Elkerton footage all those years ago.

Kelly can retire now.

Island Bay Wednesday, 1 Feb 2017 at 08:49 pm new

So much better than Kelly. Sorry, I know that it's blasphemous to say so.

His tube riding was always incredible, but those Sunset carves and hacks are so pure and perfect and brutal.

Best surfing I've ever seen.

By a very wide margin.

But still not my favourite style ....cough ( Curren) ........cough ( Occy ).

Old timers ?

Get off my lawn !

Bungan33 Thursday, 2 Feb 2017 at 08:48 am new

Sweet Jesus...the line he draws at 8:50......

Bungan33 Thursday, 2 Feb 2017 at 08:51 am new

Hate to be his knee surgeon when he is 40 though!! Makes my 42 year old knees hurt just watching those landings....

inzider Thursday, 2 Feb 2017 at 09:27 am new

he has great technique for those landings, probably because he skates a bit and understands whats needed to avoid blowing ACL's etc. Genetics play a big part in knee longevity I would guess also so who knows how long he will keep blasting. My guess would be he will eventually stop going for airs he knows have to be landed on the flats and only hit the air when he knows hes landing back high on the tranny. Airs to flat are shit to watch and shit to land for the carcass doing them.

oldman Thursday, 2 Feb 2017 at 12:54 pm new

Agree with Benski. Kelly can pass the torch.
The air around 9.40 is insane !!!!!!

memlasurf Thursday, 2 Feb 2017 at 01:31 pm new

Yep freak those carves on those big faces are nuts. If all the contest are held in decent sized surf there area only 2 who will be duking it out, the other is Jordy however I reckon even he can' match this guy.

tonybarber Thursday, 2 Feb 2017 at 01:49 pm new

Great surfing and good luck to the rest of the WSL ... the champ is on song.

syril500 Saturday, 4 Feb 2017 at 04:13 pm new

Top turn at 8:50 is insane

goofyfoot Sunday, 5 Feb 2017 at 04:01 pm new

stunet Monday, 6 Feb 2017 at 12:57 pm new
