Tyler Wright behind the rock - video

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

“That was… definitely… one of the best barrels I’ve ever had at Snapper," said Tyler Wright of this behind the rock beast.

“I saw it coming through a ways off and I wasn’t going to go, but my brother Mikey (Wright) was like… ‘Ty, this is yours!’ And I started getting called onto it by a bunch of guys in the lineup. So, I went. It was epic. I could not stop smiling. I’m actually still smiling just talking about it.”

Just read "the finest line" by rusty long. So inspiring to read about the paddle movement, even though I love watching Ross Clark Jones on the tow board. Pro surfers don't come out looking good, and the kind of elitest vibe shown here doesn't help their cause.

What I really want to see is a pro surfer rock up to surf in a lambo towing a ski. Can anyone verify if a lambo can in fact be ordered with a tow ball?

LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!!!! I was paddling there on Wednesday. There was 2 paddle surfers and 7 jet skis that took all the waves, just when a sets would come they would zip out the back and steal it. They would also pick up their mates and drop them deeper than us. The skis drivers literally told us to "fuck off" and sprayed us with their jet wake and putrid fumes. Almost every wave I caught was chopped up from jet ski wakes which really ruined it. My cousin pulled in to one barrel and a jet ski dropped down the face cutting him off "dropping in" allowing his mate to step off and get a barrel whilst his mates filmed from the channel. I mentioned this to the surfer and he told me to "get over it" and "fuck off". My cousin who was dropped in on, hit his head during the wipeout and could not surf the next day. Only after a group of about 40 school children rocked up and started paddling did some of the skis start to leave , yes, it was that extreme to warrant jet skis that school kids were out!!! hahaha...However, some stayed and dangerously weaved their way through the crowd which was quite unbelievable. This bullshit has been happening on the Gold Coast for years....All the heroes you see in the surf magazines getting amazing waves at Kirra do this by snaking locals with their jet skis...There are only a handful of days like this a year and it gets ruined by greedy people with jet skis taking photos of themselves to try and sell some plastic Bangladeshi child slave produced board shorts ..............What I don't understand is...who would want to sponsor anyone that acts like this in public??

No point complaining when the head of Goldy lifeguards gives tow surfers carte blanche. From an article I wrote a year or so ago...

“Yes, we allow it to happen,” says Warren Young, head of lifeguards at Gold Coast City Council. “As soon as we close the beaches the tow surfers are allowed in.”

https://www.swellnet.com/news/surfpolitik/2015/02/25/tow-surfing-and-kirra-maze-legislation?page=3

GuySmiley Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 02:05 pm new

Presumably this fella is answerable to someone. If its such a problem each year why aren't the Goldy surfers getting a petition together and going over Warren's head?

Droppinthembombs Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 03:17 pm new

Tow surfing code of conduct developed with consultation from Gold Coast council, Surfing QLD and Maritime safety. Note the prohibited area of Burleigh and Currumbin unless no other person is in the water. Ha.

https://www.msq.qld.gov.au/-/media/MSQInternet/MSQFiles/Home/Waterways/T…

kaiser Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 07:14 pm new

I think you'll find they'll claim that step offs is not tow surfing - as in - no rope and nobody following behind. Otherwise a shuttle service back to the top of the point also is not 'tow surfing'. No less dangerous, though, as the ski is the hazard, not the dude holding the rope

uncle_nico Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 09:26 pm new

Nah, thought the same thing but that (step offs) and even picking someone up after a ride or following someone on the wave is considered tow surfing as far as this is concerned.

Watching the cams the other day a ski went right into the cove to grab someone. If a set caught them out they would of got smashed or had to burn through the pack to avoid it.

A while ago I watched a ski go over the falls at 5 ft Strad.?. Not crowded luckily.

kaiser Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 07:16 pm new

Where does the recently appointed (and funded) World Surfing Reserve Committee stand on this? The only thing I've heard out of them is they had a big launch party with the constituency picking up the tab...

Legrope Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 07:31 pm new

We have towed some shallow legdes here in WA without anyone else in the water and if someone paddles out, first we offer them to join us. Free flick ins so no one is pissed off. If they decline (which rarely has happened) then we either give them a wide berth or simply park up and paddle with them. Respect everyone in the water unless they have attitude without being provoked. Still Jetskis around paddlers isn't cool at all.

clif Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 07:44 pm new

THIS^^^ RESPECT.

linez Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 08:43 pm new

Been surfing on the GC for a long time and sadly this has been the predominant attitude for as long as I can remember. ZERO consideration for anyone else.
I reckon this attitude is expounded more and more by the "pro's" and the shameless, ruthlessness that they operate with in the water.
What astounds me on top of this, is the willingness of most punters to go in to bat for the same said people when they announce that they are "great blokes" and "isn't it great that so and so is back on tour" or "so good that so and so won that contest".
On one hand lauding their achievements, on the other, complaining bitterly about their existence.

Sircus Saturday, 11 Mar 2017 at 09:25 pm new

Was within 60 m of person paddling so broke the law and documented on camera. Backwards as fuck that gold coast lifeguards allow this lameness just to suck the pros dicks.

Dean Mc Sunday, 12 Mar 2017 at 06:41 am new

Just drop in, they can't argue really. And if it is some big dude just get outer there and surf Burleigh with a different rashie and board.

trevortube Sunday, 12 Mar 2017 at 09:37 am new

Regardless of ski's cycling or some chump (50+% of GC surfers these days) snaking, the most obvious thing is the social breaks down in etiquette.
Nothing like a good smack in the mouth to highlight ones contemptuous fallibility.
Enough bullshit on land, and its rapidly making its way into the water, with a phenomenal increase of heroes.
Artificial reefs or sand replenishment programmes are a major requirement to provide further options of quality waves on the GC.
Nice ball drainer, a drop off / paddle in would of been sweeter.

Wharfjunkie Sunday, 12 Mar 2017 at 07:44 pm new

A stockton slap would be in order for a few of the etiquette breakers.

Ape Anonymous Monday, 13 Mar 2017 at 06:21 pm new

Good people, firstly we need everyone to calm down -in reference to those in the water and in the forum. We want peace among the community so that the ocean may be shared and appreciated equally and by all. It must be known that in the past week of surfing at our favorite and most advanced Gold Coast spots -that are not appropriate for competition style boards- we have had serious threats and acts of violence acted upon paddle surfers by jet ski operators. The persons using these motorized watercraft state that paddling into these particular waves is impossible because of their sharp and jacking nature combined with the velocity of water flow directed laterally. But a select few of us have spent the past decade refining equipment, technique and knowledge in preparation for such particular use. The school yard bullying tactics of the pro, semi-pro, failed pro and friend-of-pro surfing cohort has placed lives at risk. We need unity on this issue, we need action.

Plato defines art as a thing one focuses on to specifically improve and master. Within this definition we can see that our ability to surf these conditions -outside of the scope of the regular short board competition style- is an art form and should be respected equally. There were numerous breaches of this moral code in this past week -one lone surfer was even surrounded and submerged by Poel Jarkinson and Co. as a scare-tactic analogous to Guantanamo Bay waterboarding. Hyan Ripwood lead the charge of jet skis through crowds of school children at Currumbin on Wednesday. These people are antagonistic, dangerous and part of large crews of similar actors.

Council lifeguards -themselves disillusioned by bureaucracy- have no delegated powers once the beaches are closed for recreational use. Maritime Safety Queensland and Department of transport are therefore liable along with the drivers of above mentioned motorized craft. Police are responsible for behavioral activities. Calls must be made, letters must be written and accountability must be sought.

Peak media bodies are becoming involved. Video footage has been attained, interviews are underway.

What should we do create harmony in our surfing fraternity and avoid any unnecessary harm?

yorkessurfer Sunday, 12 Mar 2017 at 07:31 pm new

These type of situations are not only happening on the Gold Coast and can be really annoying as well as dangerous! So I have thought of an idea that surfers who are paddling around attempting to surf with these water cowboys could adopt as a solution?

Start collecting your wives/ girlfriends/ mums/ grandmas old stockings and stuff 3 or 4 pairs down the back of your board shorts or wetsuit before paddling out on such days.
When a situation arises where a jetski is making an intimidating, aggressive approach as they usually do discretely remove and unravel the pantyhose so they spread out like a blue bottles tenticles.

With luck the stocking will get sucked into the intake of the jetski and jam the turbine bringing the jetski to a sudden stop. If this happens behind rocks or in front of a reef it's likely the ski will end up washing in and being smashed beyond repair?

Now for multiple ski's if half a dozen paddle surfers each had 4 pairs of stockings at the ready for a coordinated release the chances of success would be greatly increased? The owners of these machines can hardly complain that this tactic is dangerous considering the risk they are putting paddling surfers under?

As long as it's done discretely it would be difficult to know who was responsible for destroying the offenders $20,000 ski so if accused, deny, deny, deny?
After a few ski's are destroyed the deterrent effect would kick in and hopefully over time things will return to normal??

Droppinthembombs Sunday, 12 Mar 2017 at 09:04 pm new

As these surfers used to roam the streets beating up innocent people with shopping trollie bars, im fairly certain they would eventually attempt to beat us to death.

Wharfjunkie Sunday, 12 Mar 2017 at 07:43 pm new

Maritime Qld should be enforcing safety in regards to this matter if Skis are travelling to quick near other water users. If someone is hit the result is potentially catastrophic.

What is the law 5kt at 50m? It is in vic I believe. As for allegations of threats and intimidation via professionals where do they launch Tweed river wouldn't be hard to wait for them at the ramp or workout which vehicles are towing skis.

GuySmiley Sunday, 12 Mar 2017 at 08:51 pm new

In Victoria - 5 knots within 50 metres of swimmers or within 200 metres of the shore.

Designated no go zones. Jet skis can be impounded or seized by Victorian Police if the jet ski is believed to have been used to commit an offence.

People concerned about dangerous behaviour by jet skis in Victoria are urged to call 000 to immediate report the incident to Victoria Police.

Mad Hueys were towing in the prohibited area at Burleigh (Tally creek mouth, sharkies through to the point) last Wed. There were paddlers nearby but even still it's irrelevant - it's banned at all times! Stoopid dicks were dumb enough to have their moniker slapped all over the ski...

At the very least never buy anything these guys promote or comment positively in any forum about their surfing skills. But ample video evidence of law breaking will come back to bite them. One day someone will get hurt badly or killed and these guys will be front page news for the wrong reasons.

Legrope Monday, 13 Mar 2017 at 03:42 pm new

Get the pricks close enough and grab the laniard. Sounds like they're due for a tune up anyway. If a blue breaks out then the other surfers in the lineup would back it up. It'll make them think about it for next time and raise awareness to the masses on sites like this. Weve sent ski's away for similar stuff. The rules in WA are quite strict so that attitude wouldn't be tolerated at all here. Shouldn't be any different there as there are more people in the water. Punch on I say.

Ape Anonymous Monday, 13 Mar 2017 at 06:20 pm new

Legrope: unfortunately we are talking about a whole different culture over here in the East. Out West you actually have a surf culture where people look out for each other, if one gets aggressive the ocean usually sorts em' out quick smart because of the sheer scale and power of the wave. On the Gold Coast it's a competition surfers paradise -the waves are small and perfect and lack power most of the time. People are used to destructive behaviors because the ocean asserts itself in a different way.

Violence works but not for long -there are way more of these jacked-up Adrenalin-fueled give-me give-me give-me more more more type persons than actual "surfers"/surf-"artists". The sponsorship logo says it all, "Monster". All or nothing..

The regulatory body should get out of the City and onto the beach with a camera -it's their job to regulate motorized vehicles. This way no one gets stabbed or run over or beaten in the carpark -we get to keep face and remain anonymous.

There is always hope that the industry will eat itself alive -it would at least be historically accurate.

Bring peace to the water.

GuySmiley Tuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 06:30 pm new

I don't understand why this isn't controlled/policed by the relevant statutory authority.

This just would not happen in Victoria and if it did the police would be all over it immediately.

There have been a couple of times when brain dead jet skiers thought it would be good to buzz people and boats at Patterson River and South Melbourne - Middle Park area both on Port Phillip Bay. Tragically people have lost their lives but there is now zero tolerance of any illegal behaviour by jet skiers.

If its such an issue on the Goldy people there need to start contacting the relevant statutory authority and insist the law is enforced. Contacting the relevant State minister would also help. Even better, get organised and get a petition going.

My guess is none of this will happen and the whinging will continue until someone gets killed or seriously injured.

davetherave Tuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 09:50 pm new

Swimming like thorpey and thought I could be first body surfer tow in. No more petrol or Diesel fumes just bottom burp energy exchange

halleys-comet Tuesday, 14 Mar 2017 at 10:36 pm new

A strategy I have used successfully when government departments don't/won't police their own laws; write a letter to the Minister responsible ( here in WA it would be the state Transport Minister), who this is in Queensland I don't know. State the problem, what laws it transgresses, eg. jet ski max speed within 200 mtrs of other water users, try and hold moral high ground by discussing safety, avoidance of serious incidents/probable death if nothing is done. Some good video evidence would probably help at this point. Then say you are putting the minister on notice, they are now aware of the problem and point out they are now vicariously negligent if they do not act.
Sit back and await a rapid response....
Probably best be squeaky clean with your "legal" personal life, sometimes this mob will not appreciate your methods and try to "shoot the messenger".
