The Mad Hueys // The Good Life - video
For decades the surf industry was ruled by the Big Three, yet in recent years the market has been all shook up with a bunch of smaller labels finding success. Amongst them are The Mad Hueys, run by a handful of mates who love surfing and fishing and ain't afraid to make some noise. Their DIY ethos and willingness to put back into the industry - they've run their own QS comp for the last three years - has made them some big fans. Think Shane Dorian, Taj Burrow, Eddie Rothman, and the Emperor of Lang Park, Wally Lewis.
All of the above, and plenty more, feature in the Hueys' new doco, The Good Life. The film chronicles the Hueys' unassuming origin and development into an international label.

They found a niche and others helped them capitalise on it. Although I don't agree with everything they do hats off to them for making it work. There fishing videos show a bunch of mates having fun.

I think all the big 3 started off exactly the same as these guys - just doing what they love and fell into a business. There just wasn't all the video and social media around then. And I'm sure the older generation thought they (the big 3) were a pain in the arse at the time as well.

As much as I'd hate to have these fellas rock up to a quiet beach I was surfing, you've got to admit that they are living life to the full whilst they are able.
Age, responsibilities and society will temper them just as it does to most people . So why not laud the fact that they are having the hell time in the mean time.
Cause let's face it, all the Temperance Society gathered here decrying the Mad Huey's fun seeking would struggle to outfish, outsurf or have as many good memories, mates or even potentially as much money if that's how you value someone's worth .

You're right Blowin. If you wanna make some coin and shift some product, then pumping surfing and the surfing lifestyle will do it for you. From the Beach Boys to Laundry Detergent and back, we've seen it time & time again. I am the first to agree that these guys are not stupid. They know their market, they are playing that market for all it's worth and it will pay dividends.
Blowin I wouldn't be able to surf better than the hueys but if you mean out fish is catch more I have no doubt I would smash them ha ha but Im not a hater.
What style of fishing you into WJ ?
Have enjoyed fly fishing for trout, bait fishing for saltwater species but really enjoy lure fishing in estuaries and offshore.
My neighbour calls everyone mate, including his sons, well that's when he is not calling them lazy little shits or worse. What I now hear over the fence has taken me all the way back to when I was a kid in a ministry of housing estate. Butt ugly. Not saying the Hueys are like this but Aussies behaving as Aussies is equally as broad a generalisation as you will get. Agreed?

Finding these guys obnoxious is not the same as saying all Aussies are bogan caricatures. It is easy, however, to pull out the old stereotypes when describing them, as they seem to aspire to living up to those stereotypes.
I go to Aussie quite often, have a great time with friendly, positive, cheeky people, and rarely run into anyone as over the top as the MHs.

I think it's an interesting story of a brand that was started with no intentions between a group of good mates. They are genuinely stoked with how it has turned out and I'm sure that we'll have many more videos to share of the journey in the future.
