Kelly Slater Virtual Reality Session - video

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

They call it a virtual reality session but that ain't quite right, the waves are real, Slater is real, the only thing 'unreal' is the camera that Slater is holding while surfing. Made invisible it now looks like Slater is reaching for a gammy left hand shake with the viewer.

Underwhelming technology, but interesting...sorta.

Hope GoPro aren't pegging a share price recovery on the product.

I don't get it?

That's more like how my world appears after ten beers.

Looked like it was filmed with a Nokia 7650 wrapped in Glad-Wrap.

We watch clips to get us psyched for surfing.... nothing here for that.

thermalben Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 09:02 am new

Gawd, that was shithouse.

Nick Bone Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 12:40 pm new

Haha. A simple, short, yet very accurate summary..

Nick Bone Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 12:41 pm new

I can even hear the tone of voice that would of been used

50young Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 09:14 am new

For anyone seen Jeremy Jones stuff in the snow....Teton on the cutting edge filming tech so I guess just a teaser...though I think POV will die of natural causes eventually.

thermalben Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 10:25 am new

More specifically 360 degree POV for surfing will die off quickly.

It's just not that compelling for the viewer, and certainly doesn't even come close to replicating the actual experience (unlike other sports/activities like mountain climbing).

Aft3rd4rk Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 12:34 pm new

That was utter rubbish

boxright Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 12:49 pm new

There are some big names attached to that clip: Slater, Taylor Steele, Teton Gravity, GoPro....and that's the best they could come up with?!

Ditto the above, utter rubbish.

Made about as much sense as the new Twin Peaks.

roubydouby Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 01:41 pm new

The vr clip of Anthony Walsh at chopes was unreal. With a headset on i was ducking the lip and weaving like a punch drunk boxer. Highly recommend. As with all go pro footage, it's all about the barrels.

And that is where the money is! Sounds like fun.

No

slashbash Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 04:08 pm new

Seriously !! That was crap. The best part was the underwater viewing angle. Really guys, think about this shit before you think its great! No !I can't do better, because I wouldn't do this. KISS principle is really easy to understand.

just had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st? Might have been enjoyable if had popped some acid first!

Bungan33 Wednesday, 24 May 2017 at 08:45 pm new

Hang on - aren't we meant to be watching that on a VR headset? IF we are then that explains why it is just silly here (but bizarre that this fact wasn't in BIG FREAKIN HEADLINES) - and if not - then well, that was pretty shit and made me feel like puking....

Well that sucked

I like the virtual sound.

wally Friday, 26 May 2017 at 01:24 pm new

As pointed out on Coastalwatch, it does the 360 thing properly if you open the video in the Youtube app, rather than just clicking on the above. Bit of an ordinary wave though.
"If you open this video on the YouTube app on your smartphone you can swing it around in front of you, twirling around in your kitchen, and get all freaky futuristic with it."

stunet Friday, 26 May 2017 at 01:39 pm new

Incorrect. It can be played anywhere as long as you're using Chrome as a browser.

I think Macmatt had the best comment although I would throw in the odd magic mushy as well. Almost Austin Powersish.
