Bangko Bangko - video

BB or DP, it's the same wave, captured this time by Peter Baker, the highlight of which is an unorthodox pig dog/cheater five thing laid down by Mason Ho.

I don't doubt that surfers were doing similar things in the 70s - it seems like a Buttons specialty - but, whatever it's called, it was resurrected by Asher Pacey around ten years back. More recently Torren Martyn and even Mick Fanning have thrown the toes forward, yet this is the first time I've seen it backside, deep, and on a heavy wave.

Wonder how it'd get scored in a contest?

Mason Ho, giving it a good go on the QS and now sits in 173 position with three heat advancement's to his tally so far in 2017. Last year he finished 94 and the year before 101. At 28 years old does anyone really believe this guy will qualify for the CT anytime soon?

No I don't but in saying that I'd much rather Rip Curl paid him to travel around the world releasing epic little surf films

Is he trying to make the CT?

MP Tuesday, 11 Jul 2017 at 09:03 am new

He has been trying for the last 4 years to make the CT, just got dead last ( equal 105th) at the Ballito QS 10,000 in South Africa. His best result was a 9th at the Ron Jon QS 1,000 where he won $300 and gained 300 points. His next best was an equal 25th at the Volcom Pipe Pro QS 3000 where he won $750 and gained 550 points. Lucky he's getting coin from Rip Curl because he sure isn't earning much from competition prize money. It doesn't look like Mason will emulate his father or sister and be a top level professional unless the judging system changes and they remove the power element from the criteria.

stunet Tuesday, 11 Jul 2017 at 09:15 am new

Although looked at a different way he competed in three CT events in 2015 finishing with a 3rd and two 13ths for 34th place overall beating Dusty Payne, Alejo Muniz, and Dane Reynolds.

He also did a CT in 2016 and came 9th. So in four events he's never placed lower than 13th.

Perhaps it's the CT grind and four man heats that doesn't work for him, not anything in the criteria?

MP Tuesday, 11 Jul 2017 at 10:34 am new

I think the criteria is a big factor as the events he did well in on Wildcard slots suited his barrel riding (Pipeline) and small soft wave air act (Bells) which are his strengths. The guys on the QS have just as good or better aerial games and throw shit loads more spray than Mason.

Liked the DP vid above also. The day I get tired of watching guys getting pitted in good waves is the day they're loading me onto the conveyor at the crematorium.
