Check Jordy's form at J'Bay - video

(Jordan Moran)
Swellnet Dispatch

"In his first QS of the year Jordy Smith went in and smashed everyone at the Ballito Pro," says work experience kid Jordan Moran. "So he's full of confidence. A big favourite. His surfing here is so smooth."

And some contest nitty gritty from the kid?

"Jordy dominated Michael February in the semis at Ballito and he's up against him in Round 1 of J'Bay. Connor Coffin is also in the heat, another power surfer. It'll be a good heat, but Jordy will win."

"If you haven't finalised your Fantasy Surfer team yet then check this out."

Jordy's awesome but if the surf is in that range, JJ, Toledo, Mick (and more than likely Parko too) will smoke him.

lostdoggy Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 11:27 am new

I disagree, Zen. I'd put Jordy out there as 50:50 with Mick and JJ and have him over Parko and Toledo.
But with articles like this coming out

I think the Goofies might be getting highly scores.
Owen and Wilko a big chance.

was it just me, or did he seem just a tad "off" in that clip?

zenagain Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 12:13 pm new

Wasn't just you Free, hence my comment above.

Doggy, maybe I was a bit harsh but he'll have his work cut out for him I reckon.

the-camel Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 01:13 pm new

he was off alright, he was riding a thruster

Winkipop2017 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 04:22 pm new

I know Camel! He should have been riding a Quad so to be sure not to get so deep in the barrel next time.

sunlover199 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 01:13 pm new

i dont think he was a tad off, it was the howling off-shore i think ?

Blowin Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 01:16 pm new

Come on , Seabass.

Show those two - thumbed bastards who's boss.

All with a smile on your face.

sunlover199 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 01:16 pm new

GEEz guys you arte harsh ! I think that anyone regardless of who it is surfing JB has got to find the hook on any wave there. Yes that wind is a fucker when its blowing down the Kabeljous valley. I always enjoyed surfing tubes in those winds, it kept the barrel open and slowed it down a bit to get that right slot. Further up the reef towards Supers from and including Impossibles, it was always a little more open and little harsher on the face hence the slowed down factor, BUT as you can see here JS does OK by me. Love to watch him and Parko surf this epic wave both are stylists out there with extreme positioning and carve always on tap. freakin awesome cant wave to see the footage of the comp.

memlasurf Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 01:39 pm new

Check the instagram clip of Mick today. I think he is in reasonable form. Wow.

Craig Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 02:05 pm new

Not sure if the footage is slowed down just a notch from real speed (could be the reason?) But I agree with all the above, looks disinterested or a little slow.

Mick however is on fire, that's fast agressive surfing!

Winkipop2017 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 04:27 pm new

Yes it is Craig! That footage of micks wave at jbay...next to the first jbay forecast has mesmerised me a little!
I have watched it at least 10 times and it still is like listening to my maths teacher in year nine!
Hypnotising shit!

Winkipop2017 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 06:53 pm new

But also Craig! Is he surfing so "GOOD" he is making one of the fastest waves in the world look slow?
Just a other angle to think about!

freeride76 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 02:39 pm new

got a link Craig?

Craig Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 03:35 pm new

Sighted fly by at the end, ha.

Winkipop2017 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 04:18 pm new

Hmmm that smooth powerful flow makes me think of ordering a thick low railed Performance's board!
But i think i did this before and could not bury the rail!

All hail King Jordy smith from South Africa!

Island Bay Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 04:19 pm new

Good to hear that I'm not the only one. Mick looks so sharp, and I still find Jordy overrated at JBay.

Winkipop2017 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 04:34 pm new

Island bay? Is that Phillip island? Down south island? Or western port opposite the island?

Island Bay Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 04:57 pm new

Mick is on point. Jordy bogged rails!

mattlock Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 09:01 pm new

I'm over the slow mo.

Winkipop2017 Wednesday, 12 Jul 2017 at 09:29 pm new

Hmmm? Does anyone think Kellys black and white trestles part was a bit slowed down? I could just be drunk now though seriously.

batfink Thursday, 13 Jul 2017 at 01:24 pm new

Looks to me like a lot of it was slowed down a touch. For mine, Jordy, Mick and Parko are the kings of powerful carves and flowing moves on the face.

Not surprising given where they grew up doing their surfing, but the flow and power is the best. Love their surfing, but dependent on conditions entirely as to which type of surfing will be more on point to the judges.

Jordy has grown a leg in the last two years in terms of comp surfing. Always thought he was good enough, but I think he has his competitive focus going much better now.

Parko is just too good for his own good, makes it look too easy.
