Watch: The Proving Grounds

Ben Matson (thermalben)
Swellnet Dispatch

After a long and seemingly endless hibernation, Her Majesty finally woke up. Pipeline made everyone who was lucky enough to experience these past few days forget that this winter has been one of the most forgettable 'Triple Crown Seasons' in over the past decade.

Once again the Da Hui Backdoor shootout provided some incredible opportunities for local and international Pipeline specialist. This 4 minute short film is a compilation of some of my favorite highlights I was fortunate enough to witness first hand over the past couple of weeks.

A huge thank you to Tai Van Dyke, Jason Shibata, Lugo, Tom Carey and the rest of the Volcom boys for letting me use your house as a drone launching pad, charging station, and morning surf check pad. Thank you to Da Hui for putting on an incredible event and allowing the media guys access to cover it. Even more thanks for not making them wear those ugly neon jerseys. //RYAN MOSS

Great clip.

And some Em and Nate Dogg. Why the hell not!

I know this is well-worn ground, but damn it, I'm still pissed that Pipeline will no longer be the last event on the world tour.

Everyone's got their favourite wave. But isn't this the one we all grew up dreaming about? After a few years chasing other things I'll probably never be in good enough shape to surf it, but I still consider Pipeline the true proving ground, the mecca, the defining wave of the sport.

Yes, Teahupo's heavier, Cloudbreak's longer, but Pipe was always the wave we talked about as kids. First reef, second reef, Backdoor... Would you go? Ah, you're full of it. No, I'm just saying. But what if you had a bigger board. Ok, ok, ok, if someone flew you over right now and it was 8ft, would you paddle out? Bullshit, you wouldn't make the drop...

Apart from anything else, it has to be the most beautiful. There's nothing else like it. Look at the wave beginning at 1:38 and the light hitting the back of the barrel.

Completely agree. It's surfings colosseum. The footage and camera angles are like no other place.

Surely the most mind-surfed and contemplated wave.

That is very good filming and a cracker edit. Some of the water shots are all time.
