Watch: The Typhoon with Mason Ho and Tom Curren

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Mason Ho teams up with skimboarding Tom Curren for an oriental romp featuring Japanese bath houses, skateboard stacks, and the odd spot of typhoon surf.

There are fewer funky waves than is normal for a Mason Ho clip, but the contorting is still par excellence - see 4:15 for a layback cheater five combo. Meanwhile, Curren does his thing with subtitles and a bunged-up skimboard.

Don't get me wrong, it's a cool clip, and I think the extremes that riders such as Brad Domke go to is great. But at what point does riding a small board with fins not become surfing? Skimboards with the inclusion of fins... isn't that just an experimental surfboard?

Mason ripping! Such an enjoyable surfer to watch.
Dunno what it is about Curran... riding that skimboard, always being a miserable prick. Just can’t cop him

Yeh I don’t know, i’v been a fan of Tom since his search section at Bawa. He’s probably a little before my time and I never really liked the septics anyway and still don’t really. That said I really enjoyed the clip, I do find Mason a bit off on the chain but still fun to watch. Also I’m just going to put it out there but I reckon Tom looks a little sickly? Is he alright ? I hope so.

I really enjoy watching Mason surf. He certainly pushes the boundaries in every way. Just happy there was no board abuse in this clip. Thats one thing I don't get. I'd much rather cop a cut or bruise on me than damage my beloved stick.

Surfing a skimboard well is like being really good at homosexual sex.

I’m sure there’s people that appreciate the skill involved and enjoy watching but I’m not one of them.

....being really good at homosexual sex. WTF??? Thats the best analogy you could think of. Or did you just need to get that off your chest

Blowin Sunday, 25 Feb 2018 at 06:57 pm new

I was surfing with a serial pest Swede a few days ago and he was telling me that the fella on a SUP that had just paddled out was his mate and that he was really good on his oversized wave hogging machine. I relayed that line about the limited demographic of appreciators of homosexual sexual prowess and how it related to his mate and I enjoyed the look on his face.

Thought it was appropriate with Tom’s skim boarding efforts and here we are.

Apologies if you’re offended for some unfounded reason.

I can’t imagine anyone appreciating TC’s skills on a short board more than myself . But the skim boarding ?

No one is queuing up to hear the Rollling Stones recite poetry are they ? They want to hear them sing their patented songs. If theyre too proud or bored to do that anymore then dont accept the coin and walk away to the life they do want.

I going against the flow here. Tom is probably bored and just trying different things. Still rips and has a really great flow, which he is renowned for. I really enjoyed the clip way more than Flippys which was boring, something Mason Ho and Tom are not. Mason is very touchy feely and Tom is the exact opposite so the hug was a real meeting of the two worlds.

why not film it from the rocks instead of having the rides end behind them in that first bit? Tom is part of the generation pre man hugging fellas give him a break

Hey my grandfather gave better hugs than that! He does look a bit beat but that's no fault - just life - happens to many of us at times.

The board Tom is riding looks more like one of his experiments working with Bamboo. He talks about it in his interview with Occy
