Watch: Griffin Colapinto makes the grade

Swellnet Dispatch

The numbers are stacked Brazil's way in this year's rookie class. They've got five CT grenhorns packing for their maiden campaign. Five! Some years that's as many rookies as all the nations combined. But nope, this year it's one apiece from Oz, the US, and South Africa*, and a full five to join an expanding storm front.

Numbers aside, it's the fella from the US - San Clemente to be specific - that they'll quietly be eyeing. Of the 8 rookies, Griffin Colapinto comes into the season with the most expectation, not all of it unfounded when you see this li'l showreel. Also, he won't be wilting from the pressure if the freestyle rap thing is any guide to pluck.

*Michael February will likely replace the injured Julian Wilson at Snapper, then after Mick retires at Bells he'll surf each contest.

Hey look I can't surf anything like this kid - and never will - but is it all a bit, same, same ?

Kid rips no doubt, but haven't seen anything groundbreaking in any of his clips, no real point of difference. He will struggle like most rookies.

Fella is top ten material no dramas.

Minimum.

Italo , Medina, Toledo , JJF - are they the only 4 in the world that would pull that in a 30 minute heat ?

Not could pull it off , but would pull it off. Jordy or Julian might try it outside of a heat.

I think he has a great style. Great tube sense and lovely rail work. I reckon he'll make a few heats this year based on that clip.

First heat on the 'CT and wins.

Steady nerves or good drugs?
