on face value, its a nice thing to do. reality is, mick gets dozens of these for free, didnt cost him a cent, and when you see how many people he burns in any given surf, it doesnt even begin to redress the balance. i cheered for the shark

It's not about what the board is worth to Mick. Or anyone else. It's about what it's worth to the kid. He'll remember it forever.
I agree its just like JT throwing his used head gear after each half. Just like holding the door open for someone or getting up to let a pregnant or old lady sit down. it doesnt cost any thing but just makes someone day a while lot better

Yep I wouldn’t surf it, it would’ve above the mantelpiece. Mick didn’t burn anybody when I surfed with him on the peninsula. Perfect gentleman.

Classic move. The value is in what MF did, not the board itself. The kid just needs to save the video/photo of it being handed to him, and hang it on the wall.
Fanning isnt retiring. Just won,t be competing full time.He will be back out there within 2 years.
One thing is certain, the board will be worth significantly more than the grom's poster Mick refused to sign shortly after. In this chopped vid you can see the hopeful grom running with poster in hand behind the pack. What you don't see, he asks for Mick's squiggle only to get a "nah, sorry mate". Don't know about the world being a better place? If anything, it highlights the disparity in a world of winners and losers. One grom on top of the world, the other grom left gutted.
