Was fortunate enough to be on the beach at Pipe as Mick took on Slater and JJF for that heat. News about his brother had filtered through earlier. Seeing him come out of the barrel with his hands raised to the sky was spine tingling. Watching him win against two Pipe legends was the best thing in surfing I've ever seen. #cheersmick
Couldn't agree more icandig. My wife & I sat on the rock under the Volcom house that day and, never in my wildest dreams could I ever have imagined the atmosphere that situation generated. Bede hitting the bottom first up, Mason Ho knocking off the favourites, the tension building throughout the day as Mick progressed through the field, Pipe and Backdoor bombs exploding and then the heat to end all heats. Anyone who says that surfing isn't a spectator never saw that day.
Cheers redhill. I rocked up just as Bede was getting loaded into the Ambo. Bad day for some, but a great day for spectators. Also lucky we have understanding wives who sit on the beach with surf tragics like us.

At the risk of being incredibly unpopular, I don't get what all the fuss is about. Fanning sounds like a nice guy, but is that worth celebrating to the extent that his retirement has been? And he's obviously a brilliant surfer, but again, why so much fanfare? It's completely understandable for those who know him personally, but for everyone else? I feel like his retirement has been spun into a very clever branding excercise by Ripcurl with the #cheersmick thing, and everyone's just swallowed it whole. 'Bet the Ripcurl marketing crew are high giving themselves for a job well done.
