Watch: Tom Wegener // Salt of the Earth

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

There's a lot to be said for shapers who burn brightly when an idea works and then spend the rest of their career perfecting the concept. In the process they discover more and more about the design elevating themselves from the jack of all trades to the master of one. It may not be all they shape though they always seem to return to it. Think MR and twinnies, Maurice Cole and deep concaves, Webber and rocker, Mick Mackie and sidecut fish, or Hayden Cox and his variations on the full nose planshape.

Tom Wegener could be added to that list though not for a design feature but a material. Tom hasn't always shaped with wood, and he still doesn't exclusively work with it, yet it's become his raison d'etre. Tom's an inspired shaper, yet it's hard to imagine that being the case if he stuck with foam and fibreglass.

His most recent experiments have been harnessing the flex of cork in boards of various length, the knowledge used in the skimboard-style boards he's making for Tom Curren.

Here Tom speaks about his early days of shaping, the joys of working with wood, and how it rides differently.

What a great little piece. Tom is indeed a one-off. I've surfed with Tom through the years and his enthusiasm knows no bounds. 20 years ago, 1998, Tom was in a cracking flick, 'Siesta's & Ola's' it's well worth a look and show's Tom a superbly fluid surfer. It is through his skill with wood that shows Tom's contribution to the wider surfing community at best. Watch him weave that Toothpick (I think it's the 18' or 20' Bill Wallace re-creation) at Noosa and you get some idea of his skill set. Nice piece.

Yeah I admire the guy but it is really soft up in Noosa on those little dribblers and the warm climate, nothing terribly challenging about the whole thing. Anybody can do it and they do in multiples. The adrenaline rush = 0. I suppose if you want to be a super cruiser, Noosa is the ideal spot.

Heh Memlasurf. You can handle a 18' Toothpick like that?

Nup.

Reckon the adrenaline rush would be avoiding getting smashed in the head by stray boards.
