The Uluwatu clifftop fire

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Yesterday, just after midday a fire started at Blue Point Villas near the Uluwatu cliffs. The southeast tradewinds fanned the flames so the fire spread all the way to the clifftops, razing every building in its path.

Approximately twenty buildings were destroyed, however there's been no reports of injury or deaths.

Sorry Dumpy, no offence meant & wishing all well @ Ulu's. Just a bit over so called surfers who ignore or don't know the rules in the surf after being cleaned up twice in the last 2 weeks by Euro surfers, who should not be out in the line-up. The last one went over the falls in front of me resulting in 6 stitches in my skull & then paddled away as quick as he could!

Oh. get well soon. i agree there are people who shouldn't be out there. i have friends on those cliffs who have had fire devastate their lives before, hence my blood boil. may your waves be good waves. i'll log off now.

"HELMET, MAN!" -keeps paddling off

Aren't they the worst, and they are complete wankers? They really should not go out because they have no idea of how dangerous it is and just cause damage - and they are more in number than ever before. At least the zilla's can surf, the Euros should stick to snow boarding or go and learn at beachies like the rest of us did.

Just returned, was the least crowded ive seen it. If that fire jumped the chappel and pool at blue point the whole cliff woulda been ablaze. nearly vomited at comments 'is single fin ok'.. fk me peoples mentality

memlasurf Tuesday, 24 Jul 2018 at 03:27 pm new

Yeah I never go to that place, prefer the smaller family run warungs. With a SE it would have gone toward Padang and away from the main group of buildings is that what happened?

andrew-pitt Tuesday, 24 Jul 2018 at 08:03 am new

Is the grafitti still on the cliffs? "Your rules do not apply"?

About 15 years ago when i used to frequent bali, i was present for a few building fires (didnt light them) and it was a real eye opener to see third world resources at work. Those guys did an absolutely insane job with the gear that they had but the reality of the matter was that they didn't have much. Think the balinese firemen rescued a few people from the oakley store when it went up, and there have been a few villas up at the padang area homestays which i dont even think they came to. I'm sure with the new road they can get there a bit quicker but god its not like here where you can call the firies and expect them there within 4-10 minutes (in metro areas). I hope the insane development of bali that has happened over the decades has taken this into account and taken responsible steps to address it. When everyone has packed up and left it will be the poor balinese that will be left with the mess.

If you accept and believe it from a Balinese Hindu point of view. It is called KARMA.

To the people of the Uluwatu Bukit, my sincere condolences. You have all been so gracious, accommodating, helpful and kind and to see what has befallen you saddens me. I am in the process of completing a Paramedic degree and when I return to Bali will always offer my service to your people should they need it. No I do not charge for helping those in trouble.
I hope others who visit your homes and beaches might feel the same and give a little back to a place and people that give so much.
Much love

Sad news for the beautiful locals at Uluwatu and their businesses that look after travellers. My first trip was 1990 and we used to stay overnight in the Warungs and formed wonderful friendships.
A friend and I spent 6 months in 98' living inMarty Hoffman's half built abandoned house that was next to Blue pools and it was the best year of my life.
My heart and condolences go out to the locals,
Matur Suksma.
